If you watch tv on your laptop whilst it is not plugged in to the wall you can do so without a license as long as your parents have one..

The link the article is trying to go to is https://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/studentinfo which works, just screwed up the URL in the article.

The article is partly bad written in the sense that there is crazy loopholes that even if you share accomodation you may need a license per room(which I think is pure greed by the licensing people) this is only made clear in the larger article.

What is interesting is the larger article mentions you are covered by your parents license if the student accommodation isnt your main residence though, when I have never heard this before but likely that TVL people dont know the rules and demand you get one anyway

This isn't true in general. It's ONLY applicable to devices powered by their internal battery that are not connected to mains electricity or an aerial.

It doesn't apply to an actual tv, but as mentioned earlier in the thread, a laptop that is not charged while live tv is being watched doesn't require a licence.

This is the line in question

"If you've moved, in most cases, you will need to buy a licence, because your parents' TV licence won't cover you unless your permanent registered address is with them."

It can be interpreted like when you go on holiday you do not need a license for where you are staying, as in you still live at your parents its just you are away from home for a while but still live there.

The reason I say this is because when you have college/uni forms or apply for grants and loans they ask for term time addresses and full time addresses.

That needs more clarification as that would mean the times when I paid for a license when at student accommodation I didnt need to!

It's just a really poorly worded article. It's pretty clear on the tv licensing website.

What I guess they mean is that, if you live at home, then you are covered by your parents' licence (obviously as you're in the same house...)

For example, people need a separate tv licence for a second home even when their "permanent address" is elsewhere. Most students are in this situation with one permanent address (parents') where there is a licence in place, and one address for part of the year (term time). If you watch tv on an actual tv at your temporary address, you need another licence, no exceptions.

It still requires to be covered by a licence, but necessarily your own.
