I know many firms will not be paying a living wage, everything I seem to be applying for is NMW. Can't say it will have much effect on me but good for those who work for companies that pay a living wage.0

This says it all 250000 workers. So not that many compared to the total employed.0

Well, at least that's some good news on what is otherwise a bleak looking economy.Lao Tzu - "Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime"

£10ph gives £20k on a 38 hour week, £15ph gives £30k
the average income to April 2012 was £26.5k
so you want the minimum living wage in London to be OVER the average wage presently earned by EVERYONE through the UK?
that will mean food prices rise(farm hands, delivery drivers, warehouse sorters, shelf stackers and retailers need paying), council tax rises (hardly anyone in the council earns 30k), tax burden increased through the largest employer (NHS) having to pay its car park cleaners £30k. Cue massive inflation, triggering recession, devaluation of currency and huge unemployment. Oh, by the way, JSA is still only £7o.40 a week. so when you loose your job, you cannot eat, due to the huge increase in food costs. Pensions don't increase as the stock market crashes and the investments loose.

To all those of you who have commented on the living wage, let me tell you my situation. I am employed as a Security Guard earning £6.50 ph. I contacted my 'Employer' recently to suggest that they increase the hourly rate. His response was rather abusive, and i was told that the rate was staying exactly the same, and that if i didn't like it then i should leave.
Think how much better us low paid would be if we were put on a living wage. I'd settle for £7 ph, but i know speaking personally that i could afford to save a lot more if i was paid a decent hourly rate.
I am sick of Employers moaning that they would go out of business if they had to increase their employees pay. This argument has gone on since the National Minimum Wage was introduced.
Whatever one thinks about the Labour Party at the moment, at least they have raised the subject of the living wage, and that all employers should pay it. I live in hope that all of us on the measly so called minimum wage, can look forward to a more prosperous future where you are paid a fair wage for a fair day's work.0
