I changed to First:Utility last year, having been tempted by their low prices and offer of a Smart Meter. It was an utter disaster! When I tried to pay by monthly direct debit they did not deduct the sums owing, and I discovered that I was over £1,000 in debt to them. I could not pay through their secure site and ended up having to ring them (average time before answering call over 15 mins ) and give my details over the phone. I finally handed all the emails to my solicitor who waved his magic wand! I never got the Smart Meter, either! I may have to pay more but at least I have no nasty surprises at the end of the month.0

Are First Utility a stand-alone company or a subsidiary like Ebico or M&S?0

First Utility are going to put their prices up by more than the others as they will be doing later on would be another way to look at itMixed Martial Arts is the greatest sport known to mankind and anyone who says it is 'a bar room brawl' has never trained in it and has no idea what they are talking about.0

I think they are stand alone and they've got some good fix rates so if you were to opt for a fixed rate you wouldn't have to worry about prices changing.0

Exactly the same thing happened to me, didn't realise they weren't taking the money every month until they tried to take £1200 from my account by DD one month.
Complaining got me a £50 'good will' gesture but I was seriously out of pocket for their mistake.
When I moved house in July I gave final meter readings and took a new provider, they continued to take my direct debit every month even thought I was receiving no bills. In September I called them to get the money back and while I was on the phone someone magically produced a new bill using the readings I gave them 2 months earlier! I received a cheque for the credit amount the next week less the amount to cover the new bill but just received a letter yesterday saying the account is overdue by £260??? First phone call 45min on hold to be told I will receive a call back from team leader. No call back. Second phone call 25min on hold, passed to another department to wait another 25min on hold to be told I will need to wait for a call back as I still have an open complaint.
In short a complete and utter shambles, their billing systems have some serious issues. Avoid at all costs!!!wrinklyreader wrote: »When I tried to pay by monthly direct debit they did not deduct the sums owing, and I discovered that I was over £1,000 in debt to them.0
