    Ouch , 32 quid a month

Zara's is 89 per month but I claimed around 17k on her (she will be 7 this August)

Cats are 20 each but claimed around 7k on one of them.

Look at best insurance you can afford - just in case.

Both Zara and the cats are insured for 7k per year, life time cover.

Now I wish I insured Zara for 10k.

With a dog, the best cover you can afford.
  • I've just opened the renewal for our Labrador's pet plan renewal. He's 11 yrs old and the premium has gone upto £68.35. Gradually, the cost of his insurance has been ramped up - so we now have to pay a £125 excess for all claims - and that also includes an existing continuing claim for arthritis. Plus we have to pay 20% of any claim. He's been covered by this insurance since we got him as a puppy. I am at the point of wondering if we'd be better off putting money away each month and cancelling the insurance.
For his existing condition he is perscribed Previcox. So for this year we will have to pay £125 excess plus 20% of the cost of the tablets which is a total of £136 buying from the vet plus 20% of the cost of being inspected by a vet every 120 days to issue the perscription.
Buying the tablets online, from a reputable company costs £175.20 for the year in total, plus the vetenery inspection and private perscription costs.
The first thing the vet looks at when we take him in is what insurance he has and to what level... But the vet doesn't know the terms and conditions that the policy cover is bound by, so u can end up with a sizeable bill for routine problems.
I think the whole issue of pet insurance and how the industry works needs to be looked at...
  • I have had M&S insurance lifetime cover for my dog since she was a puppy at an initial cost of £7/month. She developed a severe skin allergy and the only treatment that worked costs £3k a year in vets bills which have been paid by M&S without any problems.
Until a couple of years ago I have sung their praises as without it we really could not have afforded the treatment she needs.
However the annual premiums have in the last two years increased by 50% each year and this years premium has again increased by 50% and has come in at £111 per month. I complained last year when it went up from £42 to £75 per month and was told it was due to a change in the underwriting policy and there was nothing that could be done. I could get insurance on same terms for £34/ month but due to her now preexisting condition i am tied to M&S. The policy documents say they will continue to pay the cost of treatment for life long conditions but what they dont say is they will increase the premium until it is uneconomical for you to continue with the policy. I don't know if they are breaking any laws but it is definitely unethical. I am about to start a complaint so it would be good to know what approach to take. Any ideas?

I have just read this thread with interest, our free Petplan insurance runs out on Thursday. I was considering John Lewis but recently I have read similar threads where they have hiked the premiums. Petplan also pay for any medicine your pet requires, not sure if other insurers do.

Also I asked my cousin (a vet) for an unbiased view and he said Petplan were very well thought of in the industry but said to avoid anyone underwritten by E&L (Equine & Livestock).

My mind is made up and I will continue with Petplan, it is extra if you cover for the loss of your pet though death or theft. Has anyone taken that out. It puts my premium up by a couple of £'s per month. Also need to decide between £7 and £12k.
    £2.00 Savers Club = £34.00 So Far

+ however may £2 coins I have saved in my Terramundi since 2000.

    Terramundi weighs 8lb 5oz
