Landscaping, additional soil and support

Hello,
My garden in a new build home currently slopes by approximately 60 cm in the latter 3 metres of a total of 7 metres in length (the first 4 metres is relatively flat. The garden width is 10 metres. Therefore I've had a quote from a landscaper to basically level it off with additional top soil and add some support. He says it wont need a retaining wall as the mass of additional soil won't be that much. He plans to insert wooden poles at the rear of the garden at the existing wooden panel fence and then attach wood planks to the poles to support the additional soil. He estimates he will need 2 to 3 tonnes of topsoil to level it off.
He's quote me £1100 for the job. Is this quote fair? This doesn't include turfing.

So I guess there would be a lot of labour involved? The only access to the garden is a gate adjacent to the drive way. I guess they would have to wheel barrow the extra top soil in. Would this justify the high costs?0 -
Hi,
I'm not sure that 2-3 tons of soil would be enough?
Thinking of the volume you need to fill, basically a triangle 3m * 0.6m, so the area of that would be (3*0.6)/2 = 0.9m2.
You then have 10m across, so 10*0.9 = 9m3.
A quick google reckons moist topsoil to be 1.44 tonnes per m3, 1.44*9 =13 tons ?
Have I missed something ?
I'm not sure on relative price of topsoil vs grit sand - but I think that could be used for a fair depth if you're turfing it.
If you go with his quote I'd get it in writing that you're paying him to level it off, and not to buy 3 tons of soil and for him to attempt to fill the gap! That might protect you from him coming back wanting to be paid for another 10 tons of soil?0 -
I've got some more information on the quote. The landscaper will use whatever amount of top soil needed to make it flat... Could exceed 10 tonnes. The supporting wall will be built using tanalised wood fixed to additional posts concreted into the ground. Does £1100 seem ok?
