They have become normalised by the recent swaythe of cutsie advertising (I'm thinking lovely old grannies etc.)

I must be the only one who finds that advert to be deeply disturbing and creepy then.
With recent talk on these boards about the possibility that having a PDL on your credit file will preclude you from securing a mortgage, I think it's high time these institutions were forced to warn of the repercussions of their product.

Why? The PDLs did not impose this restriction, the banks did. If you think about it, it was inevitable eventually. If you keep running your car into brick walls, eventually, the insurance company is going to cause your premium to rocket. If you keep demonstrating inability to manage your finances, why should a bank trust you with many thousands?

Credit is a privilege, not a right.

Try telling that to the over-entitled members of society. Those who want all the benefits with none of the responsibility.

In answer to the OP's question, and one which has already been answered yet I will repeat due to it's simple quality, the self-exclude button on many websites looks like this:

When I first joined MSE, there were lots of people who were sympathetic and eager to help posters.

These days, it just seems full of sarcastic people who try to out do each other with how much they can take the !!!! out of an OP.

    Very sad it is.

Of course. Pass on accountability to the lenders.

Are people so brain dead these days that they need soooo much protection from themselves?
Apparently the answer to that is YES.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

    Hi,

So you know all about gamblers do you? Have you been one yourself? Your example is the definitive, one and only mindset that gamblers have is it?

Allow me to educate you, as an ex-gambler who developed the addiction as a child, of another way that it works.

For many, it's all to do with self-destruction, exactly like self-mutilation, or suicide. It's to do with hating everything, including yourself. Ask yourself where those kind of illogical thoughts might come from. Then ask yourself if you feel good about classing those people into a single group of dreamers in the manner that you had.

It has nothing at all to do with 'winning a bet.' It has a lot more to do with a society that doesn't protect children.

Now who's at fault, the victim, or all of us?

    Bravehearted -

If you substitute the word 'desperate' for the word 'brain dead' you might get a bit closer to actually understanding the issue.

    LOL

If only youn had studied harder in statistics lessons you would have realised your mistake

The only way you get addicted to gambling is because you win big then think you are the boss

ie £10 to £500 from a jackpot, you think you're the king , and think you can put £100 and get £5000 lol, most gamblers have no grasp of the odds, and i have first hand experience, because i know plenty

I have a gambling tendency as well but i am good at math

Also, no one forced you to go into the bookie!!!

MY MINDSET: if i win £500 from £ 10, i know the bookie is expecting -£490.83 from me, so it will be extremely stupid to go and put it in the machine again

Its like burning money, and do you ever hear about people addicted to literally burning money, no i think not.

A gambling addict is nothing but a fool and his superinflated ego thinking he /she knows the "tricks" of the game

Seems to me that the Pay Day Loan companies need more protection from the people that use and abuse them. Sure for every borrower with a job and every intention to quickly repay their loans you'll get a Darren or Chantelle. These are the people who we need to protect Wonga from. Those jobless folk, waking up at lunch time, living it up with their dole and loan money, watching Sky TV all day and talking on their iPhones.

These are the reason for the huge interest rates, because they never intended to repay their loan, they know if they get into trouble they can cry a river to the BBC. The poor old loan companies just don't stand a chance. Shed a tear for them, OP.
