We have always used our Post Office credit card. Has served me well for more than 10 years as I remember. No charges, accepted in every country we have visited, and most likely gives us a better exchange rate than if we had used cash. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.0

Thanks to RBS / NatWest for doing this. Could be useful over the summer.0

I bank with Natwest and have no complaints about them whatsoever whilst in the UK. But the second you leave British shores they become a sub standard third rate bank very quickly.
Even when paying in a foreign currency they charge a rate far lower than the Forex and then add multiple charges.
To that end always try and change currency when booking flights, or if possible pay in USD or EUR if sterling is unavailable.
Whilst abroad I always, and have done for years across multiple countries use the FairFX anywhere card.
And anyone who still goes and buys currency (as in hard cash) you are getting robbed even worse, unless you are flying somewhere where you need to be gone asap or you know there isn't an ATM then there is no need to take currency. Just take the FairFX (and most travellers tend to have a stash of EUR/USD anyway)
Point being:
- If you have a British bank account then you are almost certain to be getting ripped off (there are a few exceptions)
- The second you walk into a travel agent for any reason whatsoever you are going to get ripped off. Whether its for a holiday, cash, flights or just to pick up a brochure so ditch the high street travel agent once and for all. They are completely obsolete save for those who willingly let them selves get shafted by them.0 -
I travel a lot and opened a Norwich and Peterborough account. They give you a visa debit card and there are no charges using ATMs abroad. Used it all over South America with no problems at all0
