Cleaning glass ceramic hob

My glass ceramic hob has some funny marks around the edge of the rings, probably caused by spills and spatters. I've tried tipping vinegar and bicarb onto the marks and it's got rid of some of them, but not all. Any suggestions about what might get rid of the more stubborn marks?

I expect this is not in keeping with the 'old style' style of things, but I always use 'Hob Brite' on mine.

My time is too precious to me to waste it on cleaning any more than I have too, lol, so it's worth the cost of the bottle just to deal with the cooker cleaning quickly and easily.

Try heating the vinegar before you use it as it makes all the difference.

I ran out of Hob Brite a couple of weeks ago, and after seeing Ainsley use it on the advert, have been using Fairy Power spray on it - it comes up a treat.

I'm a sucker for ads on TV and buy every 'miracle' product going. Thats why I've started getting really excited about this whole Vinegar thing, and have been reading this board avidly.

Following advice re burned on soot on my woodburner glass window, I've been using Astonish, which shifts the soot in a jiffy.

Totally agree with using Astonish. Its in the pound shop and hob comes up a treat.

I was told that Astonish is mildly abrasive and will cause millions of tiny scratches that you can't really see.

Over time though, the hob will take on an 'opaque' look because of this.

Try putting some bio powder on and leaving over night. It removes most grease marks.

Thanks for all the hints. The warmed vinegar has got rid of most of the marks; I'll try the Astonish next weekend!

I have some hob brite stuff and someone recommended Bar Keepers Friend. Is there anything natural (like vinegar) that I could use that wouldn't scratch the surface. Any cleaner recipes appreciated.

Of course there is

There are all sorts of cleaning recipes listed in our "Zillions" thread which can be found via our "Collections" sticky or by following the clue in my signature below.

Right now I'm happy to recommend a mix of three tbsp each vinegar and lemon with a few drops of an essential oil of your choice (to help the er, aroma ) put into an empty spray thingy and topped up with water. Leave it to soak for a while, and don't forget to rinse when done. Remember the old credit card tip for a non scratch scraper for the stubborn bits

I use the Mr Muscle Orange action, spray on wait for about 2 seconds and wipe, i use it everywhere for the kitchen, not just for hobs but tiles, cupboard doors, shelves, surfaces on all appliance's. I love the thing! I reckon its the most natural product you can buy and the most effective altogether.
All you can just wipe the hob asap when you make a splash with soapy water.

I've been using the Fairy Power Spray for really burnt on bits, but for everyday, and to give it that extra mirror shine, I been spritzing it with my vinegar and water spray when I do my worktops!!!

Got a bottle of Hob Brite already, works ok, just not too keen on the smell. Might give the Orange Mr Muscle a go as I love the smell of the stuff, fairly freshens everything up. Thanks everyone for all your suggestions, appreciate it.

Can't say if it true or not: but I was always told to use stuff specially for ceramic hobs as it contains a conditioning agent that the ceramic hob needs, that fairy liquid (etc etc etc) would get rid of.

I use hob brite - not tested on animals, I seem to remember!

I know when I bought my cooker the woman in the shop tried to sell me all the stuff under the sun to keep it clean and shiney new, £3 for this and £5 for that, no thanks. I'll get something cheaper - elbow grease and a home made solution or I'll get that Mr Muscle chappy, that'll do fine. :rolleyes: Had the cooker since November and it's used every day near enough and it's fine.

Hi - I got a good cheap deal on one of those quite modernist looking hobs which are apparently ceramic, but look like black smoked glass. Trouble is, it gets whitish ring marks on it all the time - doesn't seem to matter what type/how clean the saucepans are. Standard proprietary cleaners and vinegar haven't worked - anyone have any suggestions? Cheers, L.

Have you tried bicarb of soda? It would be slightly abrasive which might do the trick - but only slightly.

I would mix it with vinegar into a paste and rub it on with a cloth, rinse it off with water.

It works good on my toilet!
