A sadly inevitable consequence of mortgage rationing.

Rent control would appear to be a solution.

Landlords would not be able to exploit tenants and would have to sell their vast portfolio of houses. This would lower prices and mean more families are able to get on the housing ladder.

Rent controls don't fix a housing shortage.

    They'll likely only worsen it.

Builders won't build what they can't sell, so thanks to mortgage rationing, house building has fallen off a cliff.

Worsening the housing shortage and driving up rents.

Well, when nobody can afford the rents, what then?

    Think you're missing something here.

Landlords across the UK would be forced to sell off their houses if rent control was imposed.

This would lower house prices (supply and demand) and open the market to buyers.

Mortgages would therefore be easier to obtain.

... and if landlords sell off the houses they previously rented, there would be fewer properties available to rent.

I see your point however this is the same as the number of houses available to buy mentioned above. To use the same phrase "supply and demand" if more people buy less people rent therefore less demand.
  • to get to the point in hand though I rent and am unable to save a reasonable amount of money to buy.

If rent continues to rise I can forget about buying unless a long lost relative dies leaving me enough money for a deposit.

I totally agree with bringing in rent control. There are 2 identical aparments to rent where I live 1 at £105 more per month than the other for no reason other than it being 2 different landlords each Making up their own rates.

What is this fairer distribution of wealth I keep hearing about?
    Is it Communism?

If I can get a cut from someone who has too much compared to the rest, surely it's a good thing for me?

When the Chinese communists rolled into town, they promised the peasants that if they helped to kill the landlords, they will get a share of the land, but they tricked the peasants using a technicality. Instead of the peasants owning a private parcel each, the commune owned them instead.

When the revolution comes this time, the peasants have to get better lawyers.

I suppose at the moment struggling tenants can get housing benefit but with the changes about to fully implemented by 2013. I guess people living in tents, caravans, motor homes and barges will start to become more common.
