If they really think they've fixed the issue, I don't understand why they don't take the hit this once...presumably they've been managing fine without the money for the last 8 months.

I think it's fairly shoddy to charge people this late, especially for a "premium" brand like Hotel Chocolat, who're supposed to put a bit of pride in their ethics.

If the UK Payments Council, which represents card firms, says there are no rules about how long it should take for money to be debited after a transaction is processed, why have I read many times in these forums that companies have 6months to take payment? Very confused now.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.

As I understand it, the payment is "guaranteed" for six months after it is authorised, but there's nothing stopping them trying to take the money after that.

Yet another firm, that looks to the bottom line and s*d the customer, instead of doing the right thing.

Having the right to do it doesn't necessarily mean that it's right to do it.

A Hotel Chocolat spokeswoman says: "Instances like this are rare and we are confident the measures introduced will prevent any reoccurrence. As such, we would like to reassure our guests they can continue to shop with us in confidence."

Are they aware that they aren't a real hotel? :rotfl:

Indeed, how DARE they charge customers for chocolate they bought!

I really don't see how anyone could really argue that they should get their chocolate for free because of a payment error. If the unexpected charge resulted in you paying a fee then they should refund it (and they said they would), but otherwise you should have checked your bank statement...
  • They have every right to collect the money if they want to.

That said I'd have thought the cost of refunding the fees combined with the bad public relations would cost them more than they are collecting from the payments. If they did that to me without warning I would never go back to them, it isn't only those who are charged that will be affected, what if it means you can't pay your bill in full, will they refund the interest?
If you don't like what I say slap me around with a large trout and PM me to tell me why.

If you do like it please hit the thanks button.

But they are!!! See here - I read about it in the Sunday Times at the weekend! I can only dream of hotels like this!!!!

I reckon they should give everyone affected a free holiday to their hotel!!!! :D

Bad move, Hotel Chocolat. Any decent firm would have just taken the hit in the circumstances, and this just make them look desperate for cash.

The bad publicity's going to far outweigh whatever cash they've managed to scrape out of this, and it's not a company I'll now be buying from any more.

How easy it is to damage a reputation. They were always grossly overpriced, but this?

But if you had paid by cheque, there would have been a 6-month limit to the validity of the cheque which the customer would then need to re-issue.

Just how long should a business be allowed to delay presentation of a transaction? 2yrs, 3yrs, 4yrs, longer?

This sort of holier-than-thou attitude is right up there with the myth that banking is honest.
