A great pity that a number of rogues and cheats have forced things to become a bit more difficult for us honest traders.
I would never have got my business started without cold calling. Even without being regulated, I have always been totally ethical. A pity that a few of the potential customers aren't though - but thankfully, that is infrequent.
If I distribute window cleaning leaflets, I will be lucky to get 1 regular customer per 100 leaflets. It may occasionally hit 1.5% in good areas but can easily be 0.5% or even zero. However, if I knock on the door, the return is much greater. I don't have to sell what I do. Either someone wants a quotation or they don't. "No" is fine. I don't try to persuade otherwise. It's not my way. If a sticker say "No cold callers" I will just drop a leaflet through instead of knocking. If it says "no leaflets", I walk away. Simple; so why can't others respect this?
Unfortunately, the fuel suppliers and the "just out of prison - give me a chance" cloth salesmen have screwed things up for everyone else - not to mention all those people who try to persuade householders that they don't know their own minds.0
