MSE News: Cold-calling complaints on the rise

"Complaints over cold-calling and spam texts rose more than 40% last year, figures show today ..."

  • Unfortunately a lot of these cold-calls aren't, as the consumer failed to read the T&Cs when they so eagerly handed over their personal information in the hopes of winning a teddy bear (or some such other rubbish prize) in a 'free' competition.
Only hopes for a quiet life nowadays is a call blocker for home and mobile to stop them.

I agree that some calls may be as a result of not ticking an opt out box but I am inundated with accident claim companies and PPI claim companies.

When I aks where they got my details from they refuse to tell me or say that I called them! I think I would know if I made the call.

A coupe of times when I have told them I am on the TPS and they are obliged to check this list they responded that that is where they get the numbers from!

Another suggested that it might ne easier just to make a claim because then the call would have been worth while. I told them that that was fraud and I record all my calls. They hung up on me very quickly!

I have also been told that the rules do not apply to them as they are not calling from the UK.

If the numbers had been obtained in a legitimate and responsible manner I don't think I would get these types of responses.

The problem is that my number seems to be out there and the only way of stopping it will be to change my number. Why should I have to do this?

Up until recently, despite being registered with TPS and Silentgard, I was still receiving unwanted cold, silent or spam calls. I've now solved my own problem. I need a line for internet use (we don't have fibre optic or cable in our area), but I do have a mobile phone. I've simply called all of my personal friends and family and my banking provider and told them that our landline is no longer used for voice calls and I have disconnected the landline from the splitter at the master socket but still left my router in place. I no longer receive any unwanted calls.

Not a practical solution for everyone, but I weighed up whether I actually needed the landline for phone calls and came to the conclusion I didn't. As for the mobile, I always look at the number calling and if I don't recognise it I don't answer it and I don't take 'blocked' calls. I delete spam texts immediately on receipt.

I use a device called Truecall which blocks silent calls and other cold callers which 100% success rate. I still get calls this is despite not giving my number out willy nilly, on tps and ex directory for 15 years

I found this is the only way to stop them as companies do not stop when you tell them too.

How do you blacklist numbers, including withheld Caller ID?

    If you can't, why not?

I am guessing, if phone companies provided such a service, they will cut off a profitable cashflow. We are thrown onto the sacrificial pire so they can make money

According to the recent Panorama programme, many of these dodgy companies who do phone cold calls ignore the fact that people have registered with the TPS. The only solution is to ban them altogether.

There is an e-petition to the government to get this done. I'm not allowed to post the link, but if you Google e-petitions and cold calling you can find several similar e-petitions to do with stopping cold calls, but the one that seems to have the most signatures so far is number 6918.

Or you can sign them all as I've done. :D

I an plagued with PPI claims texts and other adverts (always from random "normal" mobile numbers) and keep getting ambulance chasers on the phone after truly minor bump 18 months ago (which they refer to...) Nobody was hurt, it was just a dented bumper, leave me alone!!

Getting these idiots to stop gets more difficult every day.

HM Gov doesn't care, they're making money off these companies in tax revenue. Hey, Call Me Dave, is that more important than giving people the right to have a phone and be left in peace by marketers.

It's time to find them and attack them with military forces, far more effective than Ofcom.

Of course they are cold calls if you have not asked them to call you!

I personally think that "opt out" should be the default when completing whatever online or elsewhere. Mostly the default is "opt in" unless the correct box(es) are ticked.
