I'm guessing more are on the dole because they're currently in a position now, whereas they couldn't claim before, because maybe a spouse was earning a certain amount, just shows you how they can usually cherry pick the headline bit to make things appear rosier than they actually are.

in the north east the unemployment figures were up 8000 :(

What I found really shocking though was that out of the 51,000 people who got jobs only 1000 were women.

It really sucks being an unemployed woman in the North East right now :(
  • Dont forget all the hidden unemployed out there, all those who arnt signing on for whatever reason. I think its around 9 million economically inactive adults.

I'm with you on that sister. The North East is like an employment black hole with the occasional government minister popping up and going 'Corus, Corus, Corus' and 'Nissan, Nissan, Nissan'. I think you'll find we need a bit more attention on the unemployed. My fortnightly trips to the job centre are like a sick David Walliams sketch where they effectively look for a job for me and say 'The computer says no'!

Infact I think they are more gatekeepers of the public purse than people who want to help me find a job. This week when there were some jobs I expressed some interest in the woman at the job centre said 'If I print them off you'll have to apply for them'. !!!!!! Having a look at them and deciding you won't get shortlisted so won't waste your time applying isn't an option. I told her not to bother and that I would have a look when I got home.

The SE is not faring well and they are building an extra 440,000 houses in an area that has no jobs, no shops in the town and the schools, doctors and hospital are fit to bursting ( even the Job centre has been moved to Luton) They have wasted vast amounts of taxpayers money on a tram way to Luton that nobody wanted No one wants to be linked to that ghetto.
But what a surprise..... it has the highest council tax in Central Bedfordshire and most of the country.
I have never believed government fiddles oops figures, they are always vastly over or under rated.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

  • Round here theres just loads of charity shops, shut shops and cash converter type places. I had to go round 6 of these places trying to find my stolen bike and they were dead depressing, people on benefits hocking their guitars etc.
I even went to a bakery the other day and the place had closed down. There was just an old cake left in the window!. People at the bus stop said that the staff had been told on the Friday that it wa shutting on the Saturday! It as on the news that the chain had gone into receivership and 100 odd jobs had been lost!
Anyway the point Im making is that there is very little sign of a private sector recovery in these here parts.

I'm in the North East and I was an unemployed 20y/o until two days ago when I started an apprenticeship (as it seems like the only way to actually get employed around here).

The amount of part-time and 'casual' jobs being advertised is ridiculous, so it's no wonder that the employment rate has risen but the JCP queue has grown at the same time. As far as I'm aware you can still claim JSA if you work under sixteen hours, so because people are taking these "8hrs p/week" "as and when required" roles, these figures make sense.

According to BBC news around here unemployment rose and those claiming benefits rose to 62,600.
This survey, which measures the number of people working, showed a decrease of more than 7,500 jobs in a year.

This measure of employment has now decreased in 14 of the last 15 quarters, since its peak in 2008.

All very depressing and showing no signs of improving but then when I was on the dole myself a couple of months back the JSA advisor told me this, its getting worse instead of better.

Spot on - and don't forget that figures should improve over the summer months as there are more seasonal jobs become available.

We are kept being told there are plenty of jobs available - but the majority are part time and specialised positions.

These 'improved figures' (not for us in the North East) are based on a very low base line and part timers also enter the equation - so don't let these lead us to believe the situation is improving as the situation is still dire.

I am also up in the north east and got made redundant at Christmas after 15+ years with the same company. I managed to find a part time temporary job (finishes end of August).

The news keeps saying in the area where I live there are an average of 80 people applying for each job. This is grossly understated as when applying for permanent work feedback being received (when I get it) is there are hundreds applying for each job.

I got on the shortlist of 25 for one job and they informed us that well over 400 people had applied for the one position..

Work through temporary agencies helps to keep the wolves from the door and the one I am with at the moment is actually quite good, however, they all seem to fall down miserably when sorting the tax you pay out - despite having given them my P45 before I started work. It has taken nearly 5 months to get on the right tax code. Not good enough!!

There should be some legislation and deadlines put in place as to when they have to have you off emergency tax. These are low paid workers struggling to cope being penalised. Yes I know you get it back but someone with a mortgage, rent and a family to feed needs it now not in a few months time.

It is really scary not knowing what the future holds.
