New combi boiler

I've recently bought a flat in London and its boiler looks pretty old. How old exactly, and how long left, I don't really know. I need to make a decision about whether to replace the boiler very soon, as part of it sits in the kitchen and I am buying a new kitchen. How much does a new boiler (including installation) typically cost? And is there a way of getting someone to assess cheaply how long is left in my boiler? Thanks!

You could tell us make and model..?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

People say they don't make them like they used to. Your boiler will probably last forever. If it works then don't replace it. It might be inefficient and the savings you would make on your bill would be reasonable but in a flat in London I doubt you would be spending much on gas heating anyway so the savings probably won't outweigh the cost of replacement.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Agree with the above, replacing a working boiler is not money saving!

The cost of replacement is like asking 'how long is a piece of string' as there are lots of factors that can affect costs; particularly as regulations for gas boilers have changed over the years and radiators will require flushing etc.

£2,000 would be on the low side, could be double that or more. Get a firm like British Gas to give you a free estimate - they will of course be much more expensive than most gas fitters. However you will get a list of what is required.

As you are doubtless aware, there are a lot of 'cowboys' in London - so you need to have a base line of costs.

There is a thing called a "Health Check" that you can pay to have done on a boiler, which means they tell you if it's on its last legs or is OK.

Have your boiler serviced by a RGI recommended to you by a source you trust. He/she could give you advice re: availability of parts, implication for kitchen design/futureproofing. My OH often comes across ancient floor standing boilers smack dab in the middle of a high end kitchen...much disruption and expense results when the boiler goes to the great beyond.

Are you going to build the NEW kitchen around OLD pipework?

So if the old combi dies in X years, you intend to rip out the kitchen to run:

    22mm gas pipe
    Condensate run

    and possibly

    Hide the TF1/Magnaclean filter
    Electricity supply
    control cables

On the other hand, if you buy the Selco units, you will need a new kitchen in 10 years anyway.
