Money Moral Dilemma: Time to tell on the veg hoarders?
Our local supermarket clears out fruit & veg for pennies right before closing time, and there's a bunch of regulars who come to get a good bargain at that time. Recently a few have been getting very aggressive, stockpiling things for hours ahead until the store assistant comes around, leaving little for anyone else. Should I complain to the manager or is all fair in the name of a bargain?

I would inform them. They should want to know that people in the shop are making other people uncomfortable.
If these people were barred, it doesn't sound as though the shop would lose out by losing customers - these customers wouldn't very profitable to the shop. Whereas losing other, decent, customers as a result of letting it continue would be worse for them.0 -
I don't think it should be reported, they will catch on eventually. It's not in the shops interests to allow this to continue, while the stock is being hoarded for hours, someone else could be buying it.
Around here (in student-ville), pretty much all the shops seem to have a big window (of about three or more hours), when the discounting happens. It seems to be pretty random when during that time, I can only assume its deliberate to stop this kind of thing from happening.
Of course, then it's more pot luck than anything else but presumably that's more fair that what the OP describes. I think this will probably sort itself out but who knows you might do well to speed up the process and complain!0 -
I think a friendly word with the manager, rather than a complaint/reporting them would work better.0

Perhaps a "Are you aware....." type message, letting them know that it has put you off shopping there would be best.
Then if nothing happens, go on to the full complaint. Its nothing to do with money saving and everything to do with making sure that people can do their shopping without fear of intimidation.0 -
I would definitely complain. I remember a few years ago going to a Sainsburys superstore at midnight and finding avocados reduced to 5p each, with some joker putting all of them (about 50) into his trolley. Goodness only knows what he intended to do with them, because he certainly wasn't a stallholder or cafe owner.
So I complained and the supervisor distributed them among the dozen or so other people who wanted one or two.0 -
Snitch.... no not you, I mean to the management!0

This sounds like the same greedy behaviour many people experience during Boots January sale. A casual word with the manager/assistant manager sounds like the best step initially in this case as its doing Tesco no favours either.2020 Wins:

Stockpiling veg for hours ahead? What does that mean? So funny! Sad they do it... even more sad you complain about them doing it .. this is a joke? yes?0

You cannot stockpile in the places I know. Once it is off the shelf, it cannot be reduced. So, if someone is stockpiling veg and a staff member is reducing it, more often than not, they shouldn't be. It can be a sackable offence in some places. Mainly because what is stopping you getting a mate to come in, hold lots, and you reduce it for yourself.
I have had a situation where I picked something up, the store assistant told me they were about to reduce it, but that it'd have to go back on the shelf to be reduced. So back it went, got picked up, sticker put on, back on shelf, and then I picked it up again. Better than a P45!0 -
