This thread is specifically to discuss feedback for
British Gas's free solar panels (Link)

If you've had solar panels installed by this company, we'd love to know how it went, so we can improve the guide. Things we'd like to know:

  • Whereabouts are you?
  • How smooth was the panel-fitting process?
  • How much did you save on your electricity bill?
  • How long did you have to wait for the panels?
  • What are your tips to ensure you get the most out of the free panels?
  • Were there any technical glitches?
  • What should other MoneySavers watch out for when signing up?

  • I own two properties in Scotland and have attempted to get panels fitted by British Gas for both using the free fit scheme.

Both properties are 3-bedroom, one is detached with a SW facing roof and the other is mid-terrace with S facing roof.

I was told that they are using Google Earth to check the size and direction of the roof for both properties.

The mid-terrace was refused due to the roof being "too small" and the detached was refused because the roof is beyond their guidline for SW facing!!!

What a cop-out. I was told on both occasions that they need to get maximum sunlight to operate efficiently, but I am under the impression that solar panels use "Daylight" not Sunshine to operate. Ideally south facing is best, but any roof direction should still generate power from solar panels.

They then offered to sell me panels for the mid-terrace (even though they stated the roof was too small) for £8000.

Tread carefully with this one, British Gas may be a big player, but it seems like a bit of a con to me!!!

    Why is it a con?

It is a straight business venture by BG - they want to maximise their income on any expentiture.

For a start any property in Scotland is at a disadvantage purely because of its latitude.

Secondly the roofs on your properties are less than ideal, for the reasons you state, and they can get a higher return for the same expenditure on more suitable properties.

I doubt any 'rent a roof' company would fit panels - have you tried?
