What was the source of the promotional code and why wasn't it stated who it applied to as per the terms of the terms of the discount codes 'n' vouchers board?

I didn't think promotional codes were allowed to be posted on any other board?

I also understood you are not permitted to quote the source as a third party site that is also advertising the code, like HUKD (since they don't have a similar policy MSE have on such matters)

I thought part of the reason for the MSE policy was to avoid it's readers getting into such a situation (as well as possibly protecting MSE against litigation)

    Hi Premier,

MSE users found this promotion on their own. This is just a news story alerting the many people who have tried that it's likely they will get the £20.

I'm not sure i get the point you are making?

    Thanks

I thought you were referring to an offer that was being promoted on MSE, perhaps as a result of the find of a fellow MSE member which had been published on the MSE forum.

If this were the case, and the MSE rules were being followed, I'm not sure how other MSE readers would be affected.

Sadly, the internet as a whole does host huge numbers of promotional codes without the details that MSE requires, which certainly can lead to issues if people use them without the appropriate permission (which they may not be aware of due to them not being advertised there).
For example, the other website you mention in the article certainly is advertising the code (along with numerous others that don't specify the source or who is entitled to use the code)- unfortunately that site doesn't have the controls in place that MSE has to protect its readers. :)

If it's just a general news story, how about widening it to include a warning against the use promotional codes found elsewhere on the internet where the sites don't require the source and details of who is entitled to use it to be posted?

What a load of tosh. Nothing in the T&Cs on that page about being a personal recipient.

It can be found on google..... surely if you had any brains you would prevent the page from being indexed by search engines if it were not available to all. Nope - this is free advertising for ING - they'll happily open you an account and renege on the sweetener as it's gotten too popular.

Have they backed up the claim about only being open to those who receive the code by supplying literature bearing the code AND such a clause?

    Hi thepearce,

After talking to them, the releavnt T&C seems to be this one
Promotional offer is limited to the addressee only or members of the household at which the addressee lives

Before everyone gets too despondent this is NOT the first time ING have stated that a promotional offer Is only for the household which received the leaflet/E-mail drop.
I opened an ING account a couple of years ago along with dozens of others after finding that offer here on MSE. That promotion was also for intended recipients only apparently.

I got my £50 (more back then) just as many others here did !

Fair enough but it's ridiculous to have all this information (promotional code) open to anyone on a web page. To have indexed by search engines is more so.

If they really want to lock it down they should use unique (once only) codes.

(I'm not affected as I already have an ING account).

Sorry for going off topic a touch, but can anyone confirm whether or not ING run a credit check? I did skim through the T&C's but the wording seemed ambiguous - well, just not clear to me.

The email after said 'regulatory checks'. I assume that isn't a credit check, just procedural, and it's not like I applied for credit. I've don't want any checks as I'm hoping to avoid a certain bank who are chasing me for charges (they can kiss it!). They've given up for the mo, but you know what a CRA nudge would bring up.

I needed a good savings account as my Halifax savings acc. furnishes me with zilcho, and I thought I'd get a tidy score thrown into the bargain (I know, I know!) but I'm happy to keep it anyway, just want to put my mind at ease about the credit check and Mr greedy bank. I guess I'll find out soon enough anyway.

Also, is this a full ISA? (totally dumb in this area)

    Ta.

Quite simply, thousands of people probably applied for this account and it's set alarm bells ringing.

Wasting hours arsing about opening and closing bank accounts for £20 is not time well spent.
