    Hi,
I've read the article and i'm still confused. I have to cancel a trip to Thailand from next monday (10th) my airline will only let us rebook next month to the same destination and that is no good for us.
We have been told by the booking agent that we can claim only our taxes back, (only one of the 4 of us had pre arranged travel insurance). We need to cancel the flights before monday to get the taxes - otherwise we're counted as no shows and get nothing. Will section 75 mean that the credit card company has to pay out even if we cancel ourselves prior to the flight date, or would we be better off not cancelling at all and just going through section 75 process?
My boyfriend called his credit card company and they said 'contact airline directly - not our problem' - are they just blagging it? Or do we have no chance of getting our money back?

Thanks - a stressed and confused Katie

I have just got off the phone to Air Asia and was told that all flights up to 12th May can be:

    1. Dates changed (no fees just fare difference)
    2. Destination change to any booking except AK or QZ (Fare difference only)
    3. Full refund, but only as a credit note.

My flights are in July and i was told that the FCO's advice is only 'advice' and not compulsory travel authority and as such the situation may change. For those travelling after May 12th we are advisd by Air Asia to monitor the situation and if it rmains as volitile as it is now then expect Air Asia to extend their dates. The best time to contact Air Asia is 4 weeks prior to travel for the most up to date policies.

I am travelling to Thailand on June 11th and if anyone tries to stop me I'll be a starting a protest of my own!

I'm not going anywhere near where the red shirts are camped out so have no worries - less than 5% of BKK is affected. My brother lives there, he says its like London, you just temporarily avoid the 'bad bits', and the rest of the country is operating as normal. He did say the red shirts were going home yesterday but the BBC haven't reported this so I've asked for an update, I don't believe the BBC, they've blown it out of all proportion!
Really should be doing some work...
  • I am due to travel to Bangkok tonight to see my family who live in about an hour's drive from the airport. The news has blown the situation out of proportion and as long as you stay away from the problem area's, everything is normal. Some friends also have been arriving on a daily basis and they all say everything is normal at the airport and surrounding areas.

If your travel insurance is void, take out a single trip policy with trailfinders as they will cover you with the exception of any claim that is a consequence of the protests.

Don't be scared to travel to Thailand, It's very safe even with the Riots.

In fact you will get amazing discounts at Hotels.

Just fly down to Phuket, stay at my favourite 5 star hotel katathani phuket beach resort, last time I went to Thailand there were No tourists, all scared to visit Thailand.

    I got 50% discount

The protestors will not harm you in any way, the people are Buddhists, and very caring, they are just angry with the government.

Fly into Bangkok and then straight to Phuket.

Credit note has time limit on it i think.....60 or 90 days?
The other thing is that if you switch to Singapore or KL...the fare difference might be quite a bit given that they know demand is now higher if you're avoiding BKK.

It's been stuck on 12th May for over a week now.....I'm using them on the 14th....can't wait for AirAsia to push the dates back any longer or I'll never get a switched seat on the long haul flights.

Hey, thanks so much for the Trailfinders tips - I called them today and it's true! I'm going on monday now - I shall let the rest of you know how I got on afterwards.
We're just avoiding Bangkok and flying straight to Phuket with air asia - my sister has been on the Islands on the Gulf and Andaman coast for the past 2 weeks and has seen no trouble at all.
    Thanks again.

    No trailfinders needed.
I can't post links, but I've just checked the FCO site and they've lifted the advice - it's back to Bangkok only anyway.

This advice has been reviewed and reissued with amendments to the Summary and the Terrorism and Security section. The overall level of the advice has changed; we no longer advise against all but essential travel to the whole country. We advise against all travel to specific parts of Thailand. We advise against all but essential travel to other specific parts of Thailand, including Bangkok.
