iPhone 5 and photo transfer to Windows PC

Hello,
Please can somebody advise?
Having had iPhones for ages (3GS and 4) I have never had a problem transferring photos from my iPhone to my Windows Vista laptop. I have always plugged it in, then used the 'autoplay' option.
No problem.
But with my new iPhone 5 this option does not come up, nor is the phone visible in my 'Computer' section - the only thing that is is Photo Stream.
This is an empty folder.
I don't want to use iCloud - although it seems to be set up on my iPhone. If I ask it to delete the account it says it will delete everything stored in iCloud off my phone, so I am scared to do that!
Can somebody please explain (in very simple terms - I'm no techie!!) how I can do it 'the old way' - ie just transferring photos directly?
I sync and back up my phone as I should, it is just the photos that are a problem. The only way I have been able to do it so far is emailing them to myself!!
Thanks,
Em

Can i say make sure the iPhone is unlocked or else it won't work.
If it still doesn't come up try this:
- Plugin your iPhone to your PC
- Open “My Computer”
- Find your iPhone, it will appear as any other camera would
- Open iPhone to find your Photos
- Select the pictures you want to copy to your computer and copy/paste them into the desired location on your PC.Better to understand a little than to misunderstand a lot.0 -
Brilliant, Paddy H!!
Hadn't realised it needed to be unlocked - clearly this was not the case with the others as I've always done it the same way.
Once I connected it with it unlocked first it was all fine
Thanks so much, it has been driving me mad for weeks!!

You could synchronise your phone to itunes -remember to back it up first to the pc, of course. Then the photos should download as well and should be accessible.
Edit : of course, the post above is even easier!0 -
No problem Em, this is a massive thing Apple failed to tell customers you were not the only one i can tell you.
A very silly feature to be honest but I'm glad its sorted now.Better to understand a little than to misunderstand a lot.0
