I've just discovered Miro (formerly Democracy Player) there's thousands of channels to choose from all free. There's no additional hardware needed and it's available for both Windows and Linux. You need a decent broadband connection to take full advantage of this. Tip: During set-up the application will ask if you want to start Miro at computer start-up, I suggest you choose No otherwise your connection will be slow for web browsing. You can create you own channel by Making Internet TV yourself.

That is not TV

! It's for video RSS feeds, podcasts and video blogs.

It's own description reads: "Download Miro to watch free internet video channels and play any video file."

You can subscribe to one channel or just download the particular programme that interests you within a channel. I've seen videos and documentaries that I know I would never see on mainstream TV. Miro also has a lovely interface, very easy to use and attractive, makes the whole thing so simple.
