British Gas Business Retention Tactics
Options
I have swithed to Scottish Power Fixed 2011. I received a letter from British Gas asking me to ring them with a final reading. When I called they tried to persude me to stay, telling me that they were the cheapest on line energy provider.
I explained my reasons for leaving, i.e. expected price rises and where I was going and the fixed rate deal. In response I was told they did their own fixed rate deals. When I asked for details they admitted that they only have one which is fixed to 2009, hardly comparible.
They then told me that if I switch to SP I'll be locked into a fixed rate and if prices drop I'll have to pay a fee to leave. I disputed this and asked that they get their facts straight before trying to retain business.
When I rang SP they confirmed no lock in and as I expected, you can leave without charge at any time if you wish.
I thought BG would have cleaned up their act by now but it seems not. I just wanted people to be aware of the tactics that they will employ to try to convince you to stay if you have to call them with a final meter reading. Dont be fooled!
