Any walkers/outdoorsy people around????
I gave my newish Goretex jacket a wash the other day. Couldn't find the 'care instructions' so I just bunged it in the washer and then gave it a gentle iron. Wore it yesterday in the rain and it leaks like a sieve!!! Couldn't understand it. Woke up in middle of night and suddenly thought
Oh, oh, I used a detergent-type of wash powder and now I seem to remember you are only supposed to use pure soap type stuff:eek:
What I want to know is, can it be revived or is all lost? Might any of those Nikwax-type of products help to restore the waterproofing/breathability?
TIA

Try your local camping shop - they should be able to recommend a waterproofing spray.
Edit: I've just had a google and it certainly should be possible.

I guess I'm really looking for reassurance that these products that they recomment will actually work as they are all quite expensive. Just a pity that there isn't one of those type of products to be won on the Nikwax quiz thingy at the mo! Should I start saving up for a new jacket (gulp!)
tee hee...I love the way Richard Gear signs off....'yours beadingly'!!!
P.S. Thinking ahead, I wonder if 'laundry gloop' would be any good for Goretex....if I could find my way around t'Sainted Index I would have a look!♥♥♥ Genius - 1% inspiration and 99% doing what your mother told you. ♥♥♥0 -
It's in the Index for the Zillions thread and it's also listed in the Cleaning section of the MEGA Index. I reproofed an old tent with the Nikwax spray on stuff and it didn't work but the general feeling was that the fabric was too old and knackered to be watertight.
The Nikwax stuff generally has good reviews and lets face it... you haven't really got a lot of choice have you?. I'd go down the Nikwax route and risk wasting a tenner.
The indexes  I daren't ventureI only go there if squeaky provides a direct link

squeaks....I daren't venture too far into those index thingies...they scare me to death!!!! I've been lost in 'em for days and days at a time.
I just had an ickle venture in...(leaving a trail of breadcrumbs, home-made of course, so I could find me way out again)...but it woz no good, can't find it. Even putting 'laundry gloop' into t'search box didn't do no good!!!
Aww, go on...find it for me please...pretty please♥♥♥ Genius - 1% inspiration and 99% doing what your mother told you. ♥♥♥0 -

hi there
My goretex jacket is no longer waterproof, the water is coming in thru the fabric ( as I realised unhappily during a soggy school run!)
I don't have the spare cash to buy another one. Anything I can do to re-treat it? I heard somewhere that putting it thru the washing machine can make it more waterproof, but I am dubious about that.
I have some waterproofing shoe spray at home. Could I use that or would it damage the fabric?
Your help is much appreciated :A May you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you're dead. :rotfl:0 -
Nikwax do a re-waterproofing treatment, which I think is suitable for goretex. Basically you run it with the jacket through a washing machine and it does it's stuff.
It should be available online, or from places like Field and Trek, and maybe Millets. I don't recall it being particularly cheap (maybe around £5/bottle?) but it's cheaper than a new jacket!0
