How much to refund???

I have just sold a kilt jacket, that I bought on EBay for my son (he was a lot bigger than I thought). Buyer has got back and said the lacket looks funny on him and can he have a refund. I just have a feeling he didn't think his purchase through and is possibly trying it on.

I have checked my description and it all the measurements are there and feel there should be a little bit of caveat emptor. At the end of the day I reckon I will refund a proportion if he sends it back.

What do you guys think? How much should I refund. I stupidly put this item on my main selling account on which I sell my most profitable items at a premium price and the last thing I need is a big fat negative winking at my buyers many of whom are in Europe.

This is what I have sent to him so far:-

"Hi
The jacket is a normal kilt jacket and the shoulders are as you would find on any jacket of that design.

Have you considered having a tailor look at it?

I will consider a refund, what do you think would be an acceptable refund?"

  • Personally i don't think you should refund him. At the end of the day he can always send it on again. The items on Ebay are sold as described, if you described it well then he doesn't have a leg to stand on. If it was damaged when he recieved it then that would be a different matter, in that case i would give him his money back but he's decided he wants a refund because it "doesn't fit".

If he gets really pushy you could maybe offer to refund postage costs but i really do think he is trying it on.

If he was in anyway unsure that an item like that would look "funny" you would think that he should have bought from a retailer or at least tried some on there so he could get his correct measurements.

Which means I gotta tell a story.... :)

I had a wedding in central London, a Scottish couple and I've arranged to meet a guy I know prior to the wedding in a bar.

He's in his 50s, BIG guy, fijian born and bred, of aboriginal decent, big mass of jet black hair and has lived in Scotland for 20 years.

So there I am, strolling through central london (I'll mention I am English), a lovely day, heading for the bar, and I see him coming towards me with the full outfit on, Kilt, Kilt Jacket, crisp white cotton shirt, bow tie, the long socks, the garter/tab thingies, the Skean Dhu, the works...... immaculate

Now you will appreciate............... folk are paying him a great deal of attention. ;)

He spots me, he has a face like thunder, scowling at folk who are standing gawping, we meet in the street, he prods me and says......

"What's with these English B4$rt$rd$ staring.........
have they never seen a Scotsman in a kilt before?"

    :D

Following on from Soolins comment..... If their is one think our Korean, Chinese, Malay, Singaporean, Indonesian, Scandinavian, American, etc, etc, etc customers want to do when they are in town, it's go to a traditional ceilidh in the kilt and take a trillion and one pictures. :) ..... To the extent we have an account with two kilt hire companies. ;)

Got it all sorted in the end. Wrote as nice an e-mail as possible declining a refund and explaining why (they had asked for full + P&P).

Received a reply saying OK and they hadn't realised it was not for "girls"

So it does pay to stay calm and answer reasonably I have also given them the OK to use my ad and photo. So all is well that ends well!!
