The seventh Galloway Country Fair takes place on 16th & 17th of August at Raehills near Moffat offering a traditional two day country activities and entertainment it really is worth a visit! Come for a day or spend a weekend in the beautiful mature woodland estate camping and caravan site in the grounds of Raehills, home to Lord and Lady Johnstone
Traditional country skills, crafts and have a go sporting events will keep all the family entertained offering fun for all, be it the novice or the more competitive visitor. There will be terrier racing, vintage tractors, and 250 quality trade stands are among the treats in store for visitors to the Galloway Country Fair this summer.
For the first time this year, the show will host the Scottish Hound Show on the Sunday, with 12 packs or more attending. Other canine highlights include a gundog demonstration in the main ring by Frances Brooks and a parade from Dumfries and Galloway Greyhound Rescue, which re houses good number of animals thanks to its presence at the fair.
11 year old Yasmin Morgan is back by public demand - along with her dad world fly-casting champion Hywel Morgan. Simon Whitehead of Pakefield Ferrets, another show favourite, will be putting his animals through their paces. There’s a vintage tractor parade, a pipe band, races run by Fife and Kinross Working Terrier Club, and a gundog scurry (a retrieval competition). Phoenix Falcons from Perthshire will be demonstrating twice a day and there will be a large falconry mews. The Scottish Axe Throwers hold their championship at the fair and also let the public try their hand. Stick making is among the most popular crafts, and a contest last year attracted 250 entries of a very high standard.
There will be 30-plus stalls in the craft marquee, 20 in the food hall, and 200 other trade stands. Ten independent caterers will provide everything from Panini’s to filled Yorkshire puds.
Galloway Country Fair is one of the more positive outcomes of the foot and mouth crisis in 2001. It was launched with a small fair at Castle Douglas in August 2002, which attracted 6,000 visitors, and by 2005 had outgrown the site and moved to Raehills, a magnificent 6,500 acre country estate set amidst the rolling Galloway hills on the banks of Kinnel Water with excellent road links from the A701 and the M74.
