FAO Custardy... "Summer Savings" problems?

A very specific question for a very specific person!
A friend of mine has been told by their local PO that postal delays are likely due to a RM miscalculation with something called "Summer Savings" - any idea what this is about?
I'm assuming it is to do with available labour within the postal system..?

yeah - I want to know a bit more about what it may be. I thought our "inside man" would know more than the conjecture that comes from hearing the info third hand!!<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0

ah yes summer savings.
this is phase 1 of a 4 phase savings plan
put simply
RM say the mail is lighter in the summer
thus posties can do extra parts of duties on top of their own duty within their working times
seems simple doesnt it?
well as with RM it never is
we started lapsing(rm term) duties on Monday
it was a really really busy day! (last years figures support we were not quiet in the summer)
so for example you have walk duties 1-8
walk 4 is lapsed with the rest of 1-8 taking part of walk 4
so those walks go out and either do the lapsed duty at the start or end of their duty
if its at the start it means we need to change the drivers dutys to drop off these posties, then collect them after lapsing and then take them to their own walk
i cant give the special deliveries to these duties as i dont know when they are doing their lapsed parts
so these also go to the drivers
now the drivers are losing loads of time and this cuts into the time they have left to deliver 'standard' residential packets
some posties have a lapse duty over 2 miles from theirt own duty
plus loads of other issues0 -
Cheers for that - so what is the overall impact likely to be? Are we looking at huge backlogs across the country, or just occasional localised issues?
And how long does RM implement the "Summer Savings" for?<--- Nothing to see here - move along --->0 -
according to RM,summer lasts 12 weeks
expect delays across the board
cuts/savings are being made everywhere.were struggling now
im working indoors just now and its a real struggle to keep on top of the indoor duties
managers are already flapping as its obvious this isnt goiung to work
their solution is to offer people the 'chance' to come in and work 1/2 a day off to fulfill their summer savings :rolleyes:0 -
Another question for you Custardy
I know you're no expert, but can you explain why when i print my postage from the Royal Mail website or via Paypal it always costs more than when i post at my local post office?
The packages seem to weigh the same, so it's nothing to do with the weight or me having dodgy scales.
The woman in the post office has no idea either.
Has this happened to anyone else?0 -
i would put it as your scales tbh
afaik the online service runs the same pricing as standard mail
as opposed to the lower franking rates0 -
The online prices are exactly the same as the ones inside the post office, so the only explanation can be that either your scales are wrong or those at the PO are. Since PO are usually calibrated regularly it must be yours.
There is one other possibility and that is that you assume your items are all packets but the PO realises some are large letters.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. well the summer savings a biting
short of staff
duties are now failing
today we had a large van duty fail(eg not go out) so loads of packets not delivered
complaints are already up
we also had loads of local missorts in our special deliveries today, guess the savings in the mail centre are kicking in0
