Evening dress for a posh do!

Options
I don't ever do dresses but I have been invited to an incredibly posh event in late November and I have to buy an evening dress.

I have had a look in the local bridal shops as most of the bridesmaids dresses are essentially evening gowns but so far I haven't seen anything I would be happy to wear and I got the impression I should have ordered something 6 months ago LOL. :o

I am not huge but I wouldn't wear a skimpy fitted number and I would prefer to have the tops of my arms covered, also I usually wear black trousers and a top so I don't want to feel uncomfortable, think boobs falling out like Judy off the telly :o;)

Also have you seen the prices ? and  again...I will probably only wear it once and £200 plus for one wear is not really my style...or to be honest in my budget.

So has anyone any ideas, hire?? where from?? how much?? I live within easy access of Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool etc...

Thanks in advance..........

  • Debenhams do a fab range of evening dresses. Think the range is called Debut.

a full length dress starts around £80 (last time i looked)

You beat me to it, bonvonnie - I was about to suggest Debenhams! They do have some really nice evening dresses. It may be worth booking one of their personal shoppers (it's free, and no obligation to buy) to help with the different styles if you aren't used to doing dresses :p

Thanks for this, I have though about a trip to Debenhams but I looked at the site last week and it didn't have much on it, they must have just updated it for Christmas.

The v neck top over one of the strappy dresses might do the job.

Any further suggestions still most welcome...

You can sometimes hire. Or I think Matalan might be worth a look. Or the charity shops. But a personal shopping session in Debenhams sounds fun for starters, even if you don't buy anything having someone else telling you you look stupendous has to be good for you!

T K Maxx is always worth a look. It's a bit hit and miss, sometimes it can be hard to find what you are looking for, but sometimes you can be lucky. I bought a beautiful dress there (£175.00 marked down to £49.99) for a black tie dinner in Dublin Castle.

  • I would also recommend TK Maxx
I have had fantastic bargains in there on dresses.

how about looking on ebay there are some companies in china who make evening dresses for about £9.99 plus P&p look in the wedding dress section and you'll never know
  • Try https://www.clothesagency.com they sell second hand designer wear at sensible prices, they usually have some beautiful things on there, worth a look at least.
  • i would say go on a trip to France, take a Ryanair flight to Pau, go to Stargoldes on the rue des Bernadottes and you will find your dress. Found mine for about 25 quid!!! Classic black number, strappy, long and v v nice! They sell designer clothes that have been "de-tagged" end of collections and stuff. Just kidding!

But on a closer to home thing, I would say: Charity shops! I always spot some when i go for a strawl. it is a bit of a hit or miss really, but I would start there!
