  • To me this is a rip off and I would advise to stay clear.
IMO best thing you can do is make an appointment with a few banks who have business managers in branches and explain your circumstances face to face. If they turn you down then it will not have cost you anything to find out.

A business start up advisor once told me that you don't need a 'business' bank account for business use. A personal account will do - it's free - just keep it solely for business use - has to be in your own name tho - and don't need to say anything to the bank. My husband has done just this for years with no problems.

Sorry - can't help with the credit stuff.

The story about not needing a business bank account to run a business depends a lot on the type of business it is. Banks are adept at spotting unusual patterns of transactions through accounts. If it is a business where income is generated by an occasional cheque or BACS payment thenthis would probably not get picked up by the Bank but if you (for example) run a pub with a lot of cash transactions going through a supposedly personal account, you can expect a letter asking you to call and discuss the operation of the account. In the current climate, the Banks can do this under the guise of money laundering.

With regard to the original question, I would agree with the comment about going round talking to the Banks individually, certainly not paying £40 for information. It may be a good idea to get a copy of your credit file first so you're aware how bad the situation is.
