Son went off to Uni yesterday armed with new laptop. We have been told to buy some sort of device like a Kensington rope  . Never heard of anything like this. When fixed to laptop it apparently means no-one can steal it it...............................well not easily enough to be a "walk-in" theft:(. Just wondered if anyone can enlighten me please?

Have a look HERE . Kensington is a manufacturer that makes cables so you can secure the laptop to a desk.

You can get Kensington style locks from other manufactures aswell, most laptops have a built in plug for this style of locks

It's very useful - my company gives everyone Kensington locks and they lock into a small hole in the laptop case after looping through a hole in a desk etc...(warn your son not to just loop it round a library table leg at uni though as although lots of these LOOK fixed to the floor, they aren't). It means that if he is working in the library, he doesn't need to take everything with him if he wants to nip to the toilet - in fact, some people even leave their laptops locked up and go for lunch, although I never felt this was a good idea. Plus it might be an idea for him to make sure it is locked to his desk in his room at halls even is he isn't using it and going out for the night etc... as it just makes it more difficult to make off with quickly. Well worth the £20-£30 they go for - ebay might be a good option here!

Thanks to you all for your help. Amazon have them for sale at £26+ but the sellers marketplace have them for £9.99!

The make of the laptop is OK but model isn't listed. They say phone with model number so I shall tomorrow. Looks a pretty good price!

They seem pretty cheap on e-bay too!
