Banana Skins

A friend of mine's dad told me it was a waste of nutrients to put banana skins in the compost bin and that I should cut them up and spread them round my plants. I've started doing this round the trees.

Have any of you heard similar and will certain plants benefit more from this than others?

I always use banana skins around my roses. They are absorbed in no time and really give the roses a boost. Haven't thought of using them on the trees but going to give that try too.

My rose bushes are in pots with weed suppressant fabric and gravel on them. If I bury the banana skins under this will it still work or do they need light to decompose?

Light has no impact on decomposing, well not enough to worry about anyway.
Think about it for a minute, aren't most compost bins in the dark?

Father in law told me that "Alan Titchmarch" recommends putting banana skins around specific plants around the Autumn.

Thanks for all you replies. I am just chopping them up and tossing them round the plants - not burying them. I might try some around the runner beans.

You probably don't need to chop them up, just lie them inside bit down around the stem of the plant.
