Cathedrals and champagne bars; cobbled streets and elegant eateries; castles and chic boutiques. Canterbury and Rochester are Kent’s most historic cities and make seductive venues for weekend escapes.
T hey also have the added bonus of being easily accessible from London. Canterbury is 90 minutes by rail and about 70 miles by road; Rochester is 45 minutes by rail and about 30 miles by road.
Canterbury simply oozes history, the centrepiece its inspiring cathedral – probably best know for the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in 1170. Becket’s shrine was destroyed in 1538 but today you’ll find a simple candle marking the spot – and note the pink stone bearing the imprint of the pilgrims’ knees over the centuries.
In Rochester it’s easy to see the world through different eyes. Charles Dickens spent parts of his childhood as well as his final years, in and around the city, which featured in his writings more than any other town, apart from London.
Visit Kent (www.visitkent.co.uk) has teamed up with Canterbury City Council and Medway Council to offer one lucky reader a luxurious weekend break for two people who can enjoy an overnight stay at the award-winning ABode Canterbury with dinner, drinks, and breakfast. The hotel has everything you’ll need for an indulgent escape – from handcrafted beds and tuck boxes to acclaimed chef Michael Caines’ great modern British cuisine using local ingredients.
The prize includes rail fares and passes to Canterbury and Rochester cathedrals; Canterbury museums, The Canterbury Tales (one of Kent’s most popular attractions with its amazing reconstruction of 14th century England) ; Rochester Castle and the spectacular £62 million Dickens World at Chatham Maritime – the themed complex drawing on Dickens’ life and works.

Closing Date: 31st May 2008
*The prize must be taken before 31st October 2008.
