Skin rash on child

I am still up at this ungodly hour as my daughter is covered in a red wheal type rash which looks hot and raised. She is sleeping - quite soundly and I have done a glass test.

I have woke her up to see if she is feeling ok - which she is just itchy. She had diarrhoea on Monday & Tuesday due to a stomach bug but has been back to normal since Weds. I don't think its an allergy as she had neo clarityn this morning for her hayfever and I gave her an extra dose tonight before bed.

I have a few options running through my head:

wake hubby and make him swop beds with her so I can sleep next to her
ring NHS direct to seek their advice
wake hubby to see what he thinks
ring GP out of hours.

I favour 1 as I think the rash is probably connected to virus. What would you do?

Hi Poppy,

I would give NHS direct a ring cos you won't sleep if you don't do something. Describe the whole thing to them including stomach bug in case that's related somehow. Good luck.

Hi Poppy,

I agree with Fran; First talk to NHS direct and assuming that they say there is nothing to worry about, it may be an idea to get your husband to move beds so that you can sleep next to your daughter. It will be reassuring for both you and your daughter. If she looks and feels no better in the morning, it would probably be a good idea for her to be checked out by her out of hours GP.

In my own experience with children...........go with your gut instinct. If you are concerned about her, then call your out of hours gp now.

You've done the glass test and presumably checked her temp; she says she feels OK apart from the itch, she's sleeping soundly and you don't report any other symptoms so there're no worrying signs. But as others have suggested, a ring to NHS direct and a visit to your GP in the morning should put your mind at rest.

Incidentally, Neo Clarityn is designed as a once-a-day only medication - it stays in the body long enough to work throughout this time. Its use in children isn't as well known as in adults. In rare cases it has been thought to cause diarrhoea and allergic type skin rashes, so do go easy on this.

Thanks for all your replies. I did ring NHS direct and they thought it sounded like a post viral rash. I did make hubby swop beds and then DD chatted to me for about 30 mins:rolleyes: . This morning the rash was still quite visable but less hot and itchy and reduced in area. She was bouncing around though and wanted to go to Gym - which she did. I take your point about the neo-clarityn. She is 10 years old and is on the min. dose for a child so I knew a one off extra dose would be ok (this was because friend is GP and we were talking about neo-clarityn not controlling hayfever symtoms in our daughters who are same age a while ago). I haven't given her any this morning as 12 hours hadn't elapsed since the last dose. She will probably have some this evening now.

Thanks for all your replies and good wishes. When I woke my OH to ask him to move beds etc he just obediently moved without much concern for either of us - typical man:p
