I have read a lot about free banking coming to an end in the future but for now can someone recomend a fee-free bank account that has a debit card, internet banking and that will allow direct debits? I currently have a basic workers account and only have a cash card (can't pay in shops) which is extremely inconvenient in this day and age.

I've been with Lloyd's for many years. If you pay in a certain amount each month you get extra benefits for free. However, I received a letter saying they will be putting their prices up so they are now squeezing extra money out of people.
I've personally only had experience of Lloyd's TSB and Smile. I've had no problems with Lloyd's. But the extra fee is annoying to say the least. I've just had a look around and found HSBC are offering a free current account. It may be worth investigating.0 -
I've had my main current account with Lloyds/LTSB for 26 years & I am happy with the service I get because it suits me. I have a Classic Plus account & I get interest @ 4.25% on the first £2,500 in my account & I pay no account charges/fees. I have an authorised overdraft facility just in case I accidently go overdrawn. I do almost all my banking online & I find the LTSB website easy to use. My branch is about 4.5 miles away so I use another branch 1 mile away if required. I therefore recommend LTSB.
I have had my secondary current account with Nationwide (FlexAccount) for around 23-24 years & generally speaking I have had very good service from them. They have a very good website but it is not quite as good as LTSB.
When choosing a bank I think you should look for a branch near to where you live/work as well as a good website & whether a monthly account charge is payable. An authorised overdraft facilty is a must to avoid hefty charges for accidently going overdrawn.
Any branch of a particular bank/building society is only as good as the manager/staff in the branch. A helpful UK based central customer services call centre is also highly recommended. Fortunately LTSB have moved their call centre back to the UK although as far as I can remember I have never had to speak to an overseas call centre.0 -
HSBC Bank Account. You'd think I work for them they way I recommend them, but they're great, and offer everything you ask for.0

Thanks guys great stuff, I have recent been into Lloyds and seen there account, and likewise with HSBC. To my suprise I actually found the help both banks gave me was good, no pressure and both let me go away and think about my final decision.0
