HPI checks from 5p after redemption (£5 outlay)

Options
Updated 14 April 2008

What's the deal?

Getting a data check's a crucial part of buying a used car, especially if it's lacking a full service history.

The RAC offers a basic one of these (known as HPI checks, although thats actually a specific brand name) for £5. Yet it's possible to get £4.95 cashback if you buy it through a cashback site, meaning a total cost of 5p.

What does it cover?

The RAC's check should be wide-ranging enough for most people.
  • Things included: Stolen, Outstanding Finance, Write-off, Plate Transfer, Indemnity Insurance, Mileage, VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), Vehicle ID, Colour Change, No. previous owners, Vehicle Valuation, Import, Documents
To get it for 5p, you need to go via this TopCashback link. As it's a cashback site, you'll need to set up an account to get the £4.95 back in due course (read all about Cashback Sites, you need to be aware the payout isn't 100% guaranteed)

Anything else?

Most data checking services put up huge cash guarantees against mistakes to entice people to use them. As mr_accountant writes below, the only difference between the RAC's check and the market-leading (and £19.99) HPI check is that the latter offers a bigger guarantee.

Yet read the terms and you'll find there's usually a better chance of a three-legged horse winning the grand national than your claim coming through, so don't factor in these rewards when deciding.

Thanks to mr_accountant for originally posting this offer below, and the update!

This discussion thread was originally included in the weekly email at the beginning of April when the cashback was £3 so some of the earlier replies will now be out of date.

  • As some of us know the RAC are doing a HPI check for £5, which is a bargain and i did this yesterday and sure enough it goes onto the HPI web page when the check is being done, so its as thorough as the HPI, one-infact its probably the same.

On top of that topcashback give £3 cashback extra for each Vehicle Data Check, so that’s a HPI vehicle check for £2, which seems like a bargain to me, well worth it if anyone is looking to buy a car.

  • nice to know this is on the latest email.

I can confirm the £3 has been tracked.

mse lawrance, some of the areas you say are not included are induded, in fact the HPI website gives a sample report, the layout is exactly the same as the rac one, i have added the hpi sample report below- this is what you will get from the rac too- for your car of course.

  • I have just spoken to both HPI (01722422422) and rac (08009755867) and both have confirmed the difference is as follows:

The rac give a 1year guarantee and upto £5,000, whereas the HPI gives a 2 year guarantee and upto £30000 cover.

So if your buying a car under £5000 the rac is fine, if you want extra cover the HPI is probably better, but the information on the car is exactly the same.

    Hope the helps.

although having paid my £5 last year ( on a car I was about to sell) I was told it was written off 2 yrs previous ( where as dealer assured me it had been checked by experian's similiar system )

Wasted many hours chasing this up, only for RAC to confirm it was a mistake in their records .
( did not even get a refund of my fiver )

Now if my eventual buyer had done this check, he would have likely run a mile, without telling me why!
