Help! 1st time flyer to Maldives (well, to anywhere really)

My partner and I are looking about for a bargain holiday to go for 10 days in July of this year to the Maldives. Does anyone have any tips? Not sure where to go and I have no idea what we need to bring with us and I have never travelled anywhere before.

I have never flown before and I am VERY nervous. We decided to splash out as we never seem to have time for ourselves and my mum is keeping the kids for us. It was a holiday or a new kitchen, mmmm, hard choice. I am worried about the heat over there (fair skin) and missing the kids when I am away.

Oh my head is full of so much questions and I don't know who to ask. I have been on sooooo many websites i.e. lonely planet etc but even just trying to pick a destination is hard enough and the facilities they have to offer - never mind flight times, internal flights, buying clothes that are appropriate and suitcases. I just got my passport form today too. I need to change my driving licence to the correct address and my medical card, arrange vaccinations.

OMG

Any advice? (apart from a large shot of tranquillisers to calm me down! x)

  • Best for the Maldives is to book a package in entirety from a tour operator. They will arrange the internal flights and/or transfers for you.

The maldives are a year round destination so prices stay fairly stable - i.e no low season. Plenty of sun cream and cover ups so you don't get burnt.

Destination depends on what you want to do on holiday. The Maldives are fantastic if you want to scuba or snorkel, like lying on a beach and .... not much else. Will this suit you? Why did you choose the Maldives?

Eclipse Direct may be one place to check for a (comparatively) reasonably priced package to the Maldives.

PS: deep breaths and stop stressing, choosing a holiday is a major part of the fun (well for me anyway) ;0)

July does fall within one of the monsoon periods but you may get nothing more than a few heavy showers. We went to Sri Lanka in monsoon season last year and in a fortnight got only about 2 hours of rain in total.

As you will have a long flight, my best piece of advice would be to fly with a good airline. I can highly recommend Emirates, and I would avoid Monarch like the plague.

If you fly with Emirates, it is possible to stopover for a few days in Dubai without adding anything to the airfare (obviously you will have to pay for your hotel!). So you could do 7 nights in the Maldives and 3 nights in Dubai if you wanted to?

I have stayed at Laguna Maldives twice, both times booked through Monarch.

    Enjoy! x
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Thank You Diamond Olly and Incapuppy

We chose the Maldives because I had never been anywhere before and my partner didn't want to trail me off to some dodgy hotel in Europe - only to put me off ever flying anywhere again. We also chose it because we are quite lovey-dovey, he thought it would give us some quality time together that we don't get at home. It will be like having the honeymoon without getting married!! We have been together for 6 years and only had holidays in Caravans in Scotland (nothing wrong with that and we still love doing it but we were skint and couldn't afford anything else). I am willing to try any activities but it seems like for our first trip away we will have to rely on a Tour Operator.

Thanks for the advice (Deep Breath) x

  • We thought 10 days becuase we only get 2 weeks holidays from our work and they are fixed dates. We wanted to spend a few days with the kids when we got back and not be totally selfish. About £2.5K

ok.. to get the most of your time there a tailor made package is prob your best bet as the charters (thomas cook, first choice etc) fly on a set day which may not fit into tour dates and as iposted already are for 7 or 14 days. you'll need to fly ideally the day you finish work as you generally fly overnight to arrive the following day.. this means you will get the most of your stay in the maldives as a 14 nt holiday there works out as 16 days..

Since you have never been anywhere before, it seems a waste to go all the way to the Maldives. It is a lot of money, and a very long flight, when what you want would almost certainly be provided much closer to home. Switzerland has spectacular scenery (mountains and lakes) and maintains very high standards in its hospitality industry: no risk of a 'dodgy' hotel. A good resort on a Spanish island might also satisfy you: although make sure you read reviews on Tripadvisor because some hotels there might prove disappointing.

I'm just back from my honeymoon in the Maldives. I went with Airtours who were the cheapest at the time but I wouldn't recommend (paid £140 for extra legroom seats which we didn't get, and now they are making us jump through hoops to get our money back).

Anyway, the Maldives are fantastic - I learned to dive there, which was an amazing experience, and even the snorking was fantastic. I stayed at Kuramathi Blue Lagoon which is one of the bigger islands, and a good option if you are worried about getting bored (in two weeks I spent about a total of 3 hours sunbathing, I was so busy with diving etc). There is a watersports school for sailing, windsurfing, etc, a good spa and a few different restuarants to try.

No matter which island you pick, don't worry about packing shoes (2 or 3 pairs of flip flops will be enough). Take plenty of sun cream, and a couple of t-shirts to wear when snorkling/swimming. I wish I'd taken a mosquito plug, because I did get bitten quite badly. You won't need anything too dressy to wear in the evening, it is quite casual there. I packed mainly vests with a few skirts and cropped trousers. Also, if I was going back I'd pack a bikini and change of clothes in my hand luggage as depending on transfer type, bags might be taken seperately.

Spending money - everything was charged to our room, and paid by credit card at the end, so we only needed cash for tipping. Some people complain about things being expensive out there, but I found prices to be about the same as the uk, other than water which is dearer.

    Any more questions, just ask!

  • Fay,

Thanks for all your helpful advice. Had been warned about the mosquito's, I have very fair skin and the midgies here in Scotland just adore me. I will take a plug and some repellant with me too. As for taking clothes - thank for the advice that it not formal, really didn't want to have to trail dressy things that I didn't need. I will pack an extra set of clothes in the hand luggage too, cheers.

Starting to get a bit more exited now that I have had some advice. None of my family have been abroad either and friends are filling my head with horror stories of their holidays and I think that is why I am panicking.

Approx how much do you have to tip? And to who, everyone? x
