Please make this a sticky - it carries VERY IMPORTANT information

If you've been using 3U telecom to make calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers for 2p/1p a minute, STOP USING IT NOW!!!!!!!!!!

They recently upped the prices of all special numbers, including 08xx and 118xxx numbers.

As an example:

0845 and 0870 - 32p A MINUTE!!!!!!!!! (Although 0871 is cheaper?!?!?)
118xxx - £3.33 A MINUTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Calls to the operator on 100 - 33p A MINUTE!!!!!!!!!!!
Speaking Clock on 123 - £1.33 A MINUTE!!!!!!!!!!

I may contact OFCOM about this...........

I spent 25 years in the mobile industry, from 1994 to 2019. Worked for indies as well as the big networks, in their stores also in contact centres. I also hold a degree in telecoms engineering so I like to think I know what I’m talking about 😂

I think business SCAM may be the more appropriate phrasing here...... :(

  • The current discussion on this issue on uk.telecom usenet group (which I started yesterday) suggests the new charges have not yet been applied (despite quoting 20 July on the website). They are also so ridiculously high that there is some doubt as to whether the pdf prices are even correct.

There should be some better clarification tomorrow. However, in the meantime, probably best to steer clear of 3U - for special code calls at least!

Assuming it isn't all a misprint then I would although I doubt much would be done as it is really only BT that has its prices under scrutiny by OfCOM other networks (mobiles or landlines) are able to charge what they want but it would highlight to OfCOM just how expensive these NGN (08x) can be - especially the 118 DQ service at over £3.

So that makes BT the cheapest provider at evenings and weekends and Dialwise during peak time at 2p for 0845 and 5p for 0870.
Life should be a little nuts; otherwise it's just a bunch of Thursdays strung together.

Yes they and dialaround (same rates) appear to be the cheapest indirect providers of calls to 0845/0870 numbers at peak rate.
But dont forget to check the https://www.saynoto0870.com site to see if the geographic alternative is listed,or if some one can supply one.
