Hi all
do VISA cards go up in standard
My other half tried to use her A&L Visa debit at the train station and they said it wasnt supported in the chip and pin machine as uif it was a solo or electron
Yet my Barclays debit card is fine ?
Any ideas ?
p.s it gives me yet ANOTHER reason to further dislike a&l:D

I think there's two types of Visa debit - one of which forces authorisation every time, like Electron. These cards begin with 4659. It's not just A&L who issue these - other banks do too.
The problem is that train stations batch process transactions at the end of the day, so the ones that require immediate authorisation get declined. If you're desperate, get them to manually force an authorisation (and you'll need to sign rather than provide a PIN). It usually works after a bit of a struggle.
But beware - sometimes if there's more than one attempt, there's more than one authorisation. The others drop off after a few days, but if funds are tight, it can make things difficult. Cash the safest way to go to the train station with a 4659.
Hope that helps.

Hi
Blondboy is correct that some newer Visa Debit (not marked Electron) have an embedded code that forces an authorisation. All of the prepaid Maestro cards are supposed to have the same embedded code.
Only part where I think he maybe mistaken is it is not the card number itself that lets you know this, you would have to ask your bank. The code is a 3 digit number in the Chip and on the magnetic strip. I beleive the first number gives permission to use the card outside of the issuing country, the second is the authorisation (or not) code and the last number is to do with whether it can be used to withdraw cash. You can find out more on Visa Asia's site.
I have a Barclays Connect card with the cheque card symbol on the back and it begins 4659 but does not force an authorisation, whereas Barclays cards beginning 4658 I beleive do. Which is the opposite of A&L. Thats why I said it is not the inital 4 (or 6) digits of a card number which used to be refered to as a BIN and are now called an IIN (off the top of my head i cannot recall what they stand for) and simply identify the issuing bank, i.e. 465902 is Barclays.
Hope this makes sense.

Thanks0 -
Just as an addition
it turns out that this particular brand of VISA doesnt work in self service petrol stations either
A&L suck
They might have advised on swopping banks that their cards are crap0 -
I think Citibank have a Visa Debit card that people have the same problem with, you need to fill up and then go in and pay for it. Just to let you know in case you were thinking of going there. James0
