Hi everyone.. trying to work out the easiest way of doing this.
I've got a DAB/CD/FM radio in my car at the moment and this is fine. However, as I'm using iTunes more at home, and keeping my music digitally, I think I'll buy an iPod for ease of taking music away from home, with me.
I'm probably the last person on the planet who doesn't currently have one.
BUT my car radio has *everything but* an AUX in socket. What would be the easiest way around listening to my iPod in the car?
My current radio is a JVC system, and the model above mine has everything mine has, AND an AUX socket. I could probably ebay my current model - the KD-DB711 - and buy the better model - the KD-DB101 but I think I'll lose about £50 doing it.
I'm looking at FM transmitters, but I don't know if any of them are any good...anyone got any experience of these?
Apple's site rates a Kensington transmitter highly, but it seems to also cost about £50.
Belkin, Griffin and a few other companies make them...I thought I'd heard the iTrip was good, but according to some reviews - they're not so great.
Is the quality any good on any of these?
A friend reminded me that it won't be cd quality - only FM.. but then analog radio is only FM, and i've never thought that sounded unlistenable. Besides, mp3's aren't cd-quality either.
If it's gonna cost me £50 any which way, I might as well get a new radio with an input on the front.
Although the Kensington RDS transmitter that makes the artist and song name scroll on your radio's text is quite cool.

Presumably you're not driving whilst looking at the screen.
On DAB, they run all sorts of things on the text display that I read.
The BBC do short news headlines and weather, Virgin do weird music trivia.. kinda like "pop-up video" used to.
I like to know the song name though, especially if it's something I haven't heard before and its on a station that hasn't hired another presenters to fill the whole day.
Sometimes on "The Arrow", they scroll for ages, teasing me the whole way..
"You're listening to.......The Arrow!
Playing..........all rock radio for south wales and the west"
Then they mix it up a bit..
"This is...........The Arrow!....At <17:48>, playing.....non-stop rock"
Any number of times, I've found myself shouting at the thing to "just tell me what the f****ng song is!"0 -
Have a search for a Connects2 ICONNECT-FM, this will send your ipod signal through the aerial socket, a better bet than an FM modulator.

The best I have used (and I have tried a lot):
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Full-channel-transmitter-charger-iPod/dp/B000EGQK6I/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1203459496&sr=8-1Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????0 -
The belkin transmitters are poor, but the Kensington Universal is excellent, brought one for OH, after reading many reviews before Christmas, and it works perfectly with good sound quality. You obviously need to find empty frequencies to rune it, but it can store 3 presets.0

As that Kensington model seems to be permanently out of stock at Amazon (and mixed reviews elsewhere..)...another question...
Given that it's FM, is it ever going to sound even close to connecting it in with a cable (if such an option were available?)
I'm not 100% if the new car has any cup holders, so the other recommended one above might not be great. Plus it's £35. I think if I was going to spend that much I'd bung in the extra £10-£15 and get a radio with a cable input.0 -

Nope. Neither of JVC's DAB models have a cd-changer input. The only models that support the ipod dock are the ones that don't have dab.
Other manufacturers are no better..only seems to be Sony and JVC that do ones with dab at all (for a reasonable price..most of them offer dab as an optional component), and jvc's ipod control system seems to be much better than anything anyone else offers.0 -
I went for a new radio in the end. JVC, Dab, with an input in the front.
Should be arriving tomorrow.
If I get the average price on ebay for the old one, it should only end up costing me about £40. Not much more than a good fm transmitter.
Thanks for your advice though, everyone.0
