Insurance for cyclists

My friend's 10 year old son has just been involved in a road accident - and is now in hospital recovering (thank goodness!) from head injuries. He was hit by a car whilst on his bike, from witness accounts it would appear that it was his fault... his parents are now worried that they will be liable for the damage to the car - which they would be happy to pay, but they had not even considered buying personal liability insurance to cover their child. My husband cycles to work every day and it has got me thinking. He has no public liability insurance as a cyclist, if he should be involved in, or cause an accident he has no cover. Does anyone have any experience of a similar situation, have insurance, recommend an insurance company, have any advice? In these days of 'no win no fee' companies should he take out insurance, if so, who with? Can you take out insurance for children? I cycle to school with my two children, and am now thinking twice about it. Any advice please?

Thank you!

    Try looking at this site

    http://www.britishcycling.org.uk/membership/index.html

the top item is insurance that covers from 5-75*

I would suggest it is a good idea if you use your bike so much, but take a look at the site for information.

    Hope that helps!!

Edited to add; I'm glad tiny tot is doing well, and wishing him all the best for a full recovery.

Hi - most people will have personal liability cover for cycling as well as other sports hobbies and activities as part of a house contents policy so no need to pay extra for a special policy. This also includes liability caused by dogs and a whole host of other possibilities. The limit of cover is generally £1m or more.

Exactly right, although the limit of indemnity (maximium amount payable) is often now at least £2m.

This is known as occupier's liability cover and will generally cover the policyholder, spouse/partner living at the same address, and any other member of the policyholder's family living permanently at the address. Will cover injury to a third party or property damage to property belonging to a third party.

Will generally exclude personal liability arising out of use of a motor vehicle, your trade or profession, or caused by danagerous dogs as defined by the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.

May well also include injury to employees, but not arising out of your trade or profession, e.g. a cleaner, gardener, nanny.

Cover will vary from polcy to policy, so you will need to check what is covered. Check the contents section of your household policy.

You will probably also have cover for any legal liability as owner of your house under your buildings insurance. A less frequently used cover. May cover such eventualities as a roof tile blowing off your roof and damaging next door's car (but you would have to have been negligent in some way, i.e. should have known that the roof tile was going to blow off).

A lot of this is off-topic. Going back to the question at hand, the personal liability of you and your family as cyclists should be covered under the contents section of your household insurance.
