700c/road bike wheels
I have the frame of a road bike, and I'm looking for a pair of cheap 700c wheels so I can use the bike to ride on weekends around town. No racing or mountain climbing, just some gentle riding around.
Can anyone recommend any hints or tips, or even a link to a product?
I'm looking for the cheapest (but not going to fall apart) wheels so i can actually use my bike. Everything i've seen in shops is 50+ per wheel, and even on ebay the prices are still generally £40+.
Any advice on what types of wheels I should look for. Thanks!

have you been looking for brand new wheels as you will struggle to get a decent one. i am having my new wheels built as we speak at the shop and they are going to cost over£150
rims £25 each
Hubs £25 each
Tyres £18 each
and spokes, rim tape and inner tube £50
ok i know its not very MSE to spend that amount but i have saved up over the months gradually getting the parts
also it depends if they are quick release or fixed and what gearset the bike is
just found these which look decent

also another option is to go and buy a second hand bike from a charity shop or domestics or somwhere and use it as spares if the wheels are any good
hope this helps0 -
Hello other
I'll move your thread to the 'Motoring & Public Transport' board.

Have a look locally to see if there are bike recycling organisations near you.
In Newcastle we have http://www.recyke-y-bike.org/ and if you do a search on google there are a lot of similar organisations around the country.
Another idea may be to check the local municipal tip as they always seem to have old racing bikes which people have dumped. When cycling, I pay the same road tax as any other zero carbon emission vehicle.0 -
I thought I'd struck lucky when I found a bike thrown in the skip at the rear of halfords, had everything on it shimano this, shimano that.... but the rear wheel had a bald tyre, and the front wheel was bent double.
I took it home, intended to put the front tyre onto the rear wheel, looked into the cost of
a) this bike new
b) other bikes new
c) replacement wheel, hub and tyre
A) £79
£59
C) £50
I took the bike to the civic amenity and chucked it into the metal skip.0 -
Wig, recyke a bike in our area would have taken that, stripped it down and recycled the rest. Very Green.
Last week I saw and abandoned part bike just off the C2C and took that in. At least there is no chance it will either clutter up the countryside or end up in landfill, and withe quailty of the parts should help repair another bikeWhen cycling, I pay the same road tax as any other zero carbon emission vehicle.0
