Paypal - preferred payment method help please

have had pp for almost 6 yrs now and have only just verified my bank account with them - until then, everything from pp went direct from the credit card. However, my fees went out today and they came from my bank which I don't want. I also went to pay for something and on the payment page, it said funding was from bank which I then changed to the credit card - I have looked at the edit profile etc etc and can't find how I set the credit card to the default payment method -

Can anyone advise please. thank you.

i belive when you set up paypal with bank funding then it creates a direct debit/standing order mandate to which you agree. You should be abel to verify this by checking with your bank to see what direct debits are set up. I think bank funding is the default and its the way paypal probably like you to complete transactions. If you are only sending payments then probably best not to register your bank details, if you want to pay via credit card.. however, if you are also receiveing payments and wanting to transfer funds to your account then you would need bank details.

thanks for the reply, I have cancelled the direct debit with the bank now to see if that makes a difference. i prefer my payments to go from the credit card as extra security (and I never have money in my bank account as it's only used for bill payments!)x

you'll probably get a message from paypal saying that you have cancelled your direct debit and as a result they have removed this bank account from your profile...but it's nothing to worry about...it can be added in again provided you agree to them creating another direct debit mandate.
  • when you go to pay for your item (after you have logged into paypal),where it says how much you are paying there is an option for other payment methods , if you click on the link you will be given the choice of how you would like to pay , click the credit card option , it will ask if you are sure , and hay presto the money comes from the card.this has to be done on every transaction. :)

this has been happening since I verified the bank account and whilst I'll remember to check, hubby wouldnt!, also, as the bank account was the 'default' it took my ebay fees from the bank instead of the credit card as usual - these are set up automatically so I didn't have the chance to change it. hopefully now I have removed the credit card it should be ok. Thanks for your replies x

A few months ago I wanted to withdraw funds from my PayPal account, having heard horror stories about accounts being suspended and all sorts, and figured what I had accumulated would be best earning interest in my bank anyway.

I had to enter my bank details and then it tells you to verify your bank details. However, you do not need to actually verify the bank details in order to withdraw funds to the bank account you just added!

The instructions said that to be able to use my bank account as the default account I must verify the details. I thought "no thanks, rather not" and have had no problem since - apart from the annoying to-do list reminding me to verify my bank details.

    Hope that helps.
  • Paypal love using your bank account to get their money from or to fund your payments. This is becuase it does not cost them a transaction fee to get your money by a direct debit, and also it is almost impossible for you to do a chargeback from your bank account.
