How can I cash in stamps?

I have a selection of 50p and £1 postage stamps left over from a mail order venture a while back, and they are just sitting in my 'tin' annoying me as I always need 1st or 2nd class.... Short of waiting until £1 is first class....Does anybody know a way to cash these back in?
I'm presuming that I can't just walk into the post office and say 'Buy these back off me, my good chap!'
Can I send off, and pay for anything using them?
Regards

if you ever need to send postal orders you could add them to that i thinkIt is not what you give your friend, but what you are willing to give him that determines the quality of friendship. -- Mary Dixon Thayer0

I think, having asked for advice on this, that a better place for your question would be the "I wanna" board where there are sure to be lots of helpful ideas; so I'll move it there for you.Hi, I'm a Board Guide on the Old Style and the Consumer Rights boards which means I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly and can move and merge posts there. I think that if you bought something off ebay you could ask the seller if they'd accept payment in stamps, I can't see why they wouldn't take them if it you were to accept the responsiblilty of the small chance that they got lost in the post- I'd pick a trader with lots of good feedback and a reputation to look after because a naughty seller could say that they didn't get the letter and you couldn't prove them to be fibbing like you could with a cheque0

Oh I didn't think of E-bay. We ended up with these stamps as we were selling a catalogue for £1 to cover our costs and thought we could then use the stamps to post out the orders, but we only had a couple of orders in the finish...
I did think of PO's but they cost to buy now, last time I sent one to FIL it cost me £2.75 I think!

Or - if you sell a few books on amazon you'd use the stamps to post them, I'd take them to the PO to get the proof of posting cert though0

Oh No! You are looking down the PC at the amount of books I have here LOL!
Actually thats not a bad idea....
