Official MoneySavingExpert.com Note:
If you had a ticket to travel with Virgin Trains to or from London Euston between 31 December and 3 January inclusive it's likely you were affected by the over-run engineering works and the delays that resulted. In addition to a full refund of your ticket Virgin Trains is giving away free first class return tickets to compensate.
What to do
If you've claimed compensation already or you booked via the Virgin or thetrainline websites or via Virgin's call centre your letter with a pincode to buy your free ticket will be on its way.
If you bought your ticket elsewhere, eg., at a station, or haven't yet claimed compensation you'll need to complete Virgin's application form on the thisonesonus website and send it together with your ticket or proof of purchase by 10 March, to Virgin Trains, 'This One's On Us', PO Box 100, Blackburn, BB0 1GR.
Are there any restrictions?
Once you've received your pincode you'll have until 31 March to book your free ticket. Your free ticket must be for travel by 30 April (excluding 18-27 March inclusive when more engineering works are taking place).
Just one ticket can be claimed per person and 100,000 free tickets are available on a first come, first served basis.
For further details and to read what proof of purchase you need read the Terms and Conditions

Thanks, wasn't aware of this.0

Anyone know the story behind this? My cynic-sense is tingling, which makes me wonder if Virgin weren't forced to do this to compensate for some previous !!!!-up, and are trying to spin this into a positive thing.0

the dates in question are when Network Rail had overrunning engineering work so Virgin couldn't run any direct trains to london, so anyone travelling had to get a coach.
I'd guess its a good PR exercise, plus as they're offering one first class journey, people will still need to buy a ticket to get home.0 -

Am I mis-reading the original post I thought it said return?0 -
Tickets are return according to the website "you are entitled to one complimentary, First Class return journey to use anywhere across our network."
And as sockospice points out, the dates in question relate to massive disruption to the West Coast Mainline due to the closure of the line at Rugby.
If you did travel during the period you still can claim compensation as with normal delays, and still take advantage of the offer - in this case Virgin have stated that they will write to you and provide the PIN necessary.0 -
Thanks for posting this, wasn't aware. Just called them and as we booked through the trainline we will get the pin code sent in the post next week plus a full refund of our journey.
It is a return journey and it is compensation for the new year travel chaos - took us almost 8 hours to travel from Liverpool to London!0 -
I wrote to Virgin after my husband and returned North from London during this period and they refunded me 25% of the cost of the ticket, not the FULL cost! I have also received the email with a code to get my free ticket, BUT they have only sent it to me for one ticket and I actually bought two! Should I complain? Both of us suffered the delays! Seems wrong that we should only get one ticket0

Hi All
I've had a refund for tickets I should have used on 3rd Jan by the trainline (although whether its missing the "£10 admin fee" I don't know. I need to check at my bank!). Plus yesterday I automatically received an email from the trainline with my pin code for this offer, which was cool because it saved me dialling an 0870 number to see if I could get one!
I have noticed that you can't book travel for certain dates over Easter (think it was somthing like 18th March to 27th March but its on their website if anyone wants to check!) supposedly because there are engineering works at Rugby again, but cynical me wonders if its got anything to do with them wanting to get as many "fee paying" passengers on their trains as possible with it being the Easter holidays :cool:0 -

Me too JulieFlicker!
We travelled from Liverpool to London, £60 in total. Should have been direct to London from Liverpool, no changes. We had to go to Birmingham, then coach, then another train. Our refund? £8 travel vouchers, to cover the bit covered by the coach replacement. Despite the fact that we didn't want to go via Birmingham anyway!
I'm really cross - and whilst the free ticket is nice, we'll still have to pay for a second ticket, as apparently it's only one free ticket per order. Next time we'll have to buy our tickets seperately, just in case....
Our journey took 1 hour 51 minutes longer than scheduled, involved 2 unwanted changes and I've got an £8 voucher and a 'freebie' that will involve spending more money. I'm furious and I will be complaining.0
