Cap Quest - Natwest Current Account o/d debt

Hi everyone - someone at work recommended this site to me for advice so I thought I would check it out - I have not used this forum before and I'm a complete newb when it comes to handling my finances as well so please be patient with me.
I was wondering if anyone could help - I have received a letter from a company called capquest debt recovery which I thought referred to a current account I had with Natwest whilst at university about four years ago.
The letter tells me that capquest have purchased the current account debt from natwest and that if they do not hear from me in a few days they will refer the matter to their legal department....for legal action.
I did have a current account with natwest about 4 years ago and when I left uni I was in a fair bit of debt on credit cards etc but managed to clear it.
I also had an overdraft facility with natwest at this time - and was within the limit at the time of university - I then moved back home - I never heard from natwest again - I kept expecting a letter from them asking for the money I owed on my overdraft but it never came...I had other credit card debts that seemed more important to pay at the time...and I guess I just buried my head in the sand over it and then I guess I was just too worried to contact them.
then a couple of days ago I received the letter from capquest - saying I owe over £1300 - and they have purchased the debt from natwest the first thing is my overdraft was for £1000 and I was not over the limit at the time so I am guessing that the rest are bank charges or overdraft fees or interest.
But the most troubling thing is that the account number quoted on the capquest reference letter is not even my account number I had with natwest!
So I don't really know whats going on? if this is even my account or not - is there a way I can get them to send me details of the account - the debt and the breakdown of the charges etc so I can prove that it is mine - I don't have any statements or anything just the old cash card which has the old sort code and account number on it.
And the 2nd thing is if this is my account and I have £300+ in charges can I claim them back? and pay back my original overdraft and if so do I try to claim them back from the bank or capquest?
To be honest I really don't know where to start - I have to contact them soon or they will take me to court...I found something on the net about a CCA that you can send to the company to request information - but im not really sure what that is or how I should put it together.....
Any help on this would be really appreciated..
thanks
K.

Are you sure your not getting card number and account number confused? Natwest don't put account numbers on their cards. Just the sort code.0 -
I'd write to NatWest as a first off, quoting your sort code and account number and ask them to confirm the status of your account.
No harm in giving them your "current" address as it sounds like these other guys have tracked you down anyway.
You could ask them if they are able to send you the information from the statements - CHECK THEY WON'T CHARGE YOU FOR COPY STATEMENTS!
I'd send a letter to these other guys advising them that you will be in touch after you've contacted the NatWest to confirm the status of your account.
Depending on the result of the replies from NatWest and the CapQuest people, your best bet is probably to propose a payment plan.
I'd make sure that you put everything in writing to them until it's resolved."A child of five could understand this. Fetch me a child of five." - Groucho Marx0 -

Mention if they can't send you the information from the statements the copies should be provided under the Data Protection Act 1998. That way they can't charge you more then £10 for all the copy statements and either way they know they will have to give you the information.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Thanks Olly - that is very handy to know as I expected that they would be difficult to obtain0

I initially had doubts that the account is definitely mine becuase someone recently tried and failed - to set up a littlewoods catalog account in my name and steal goods - but I did have an account with natwest so I'm pretty sure its all above board - and I can verify the a/n with natwest just to make sure.
I found a link here which refers to someone who sent a "CCA" to capquest to get them to prove that the account is theirs - apparently if capquest don't respond within 14 days they are "in default" and then after a further month they can't demand the money
does anyone know how I can claim back charges applied to my overdraft - because I was within it - then I assume interest or charges took me over my limit and it continued from there - how would I dispute this? would I have to dispute it with capquest or natwest?
Thanks again to everyone that has taken the time to reply to my message - I really appreciate it0
