We had some business leaflets dropped through our door last summer, from a man offering to do this for £40. I was a bit sceptical until I seen a couple of neighbours getting it done...what a difference! The guy basically had one of those jet spray machines & sprayed the roof (obviously needed access via the roof light/attic window to get up there!). I don't think I'd have the bottle to go up there myself & do it if I had one of those machines, so I felt it was £40 well spent. The roof is still looking far better than those who didn't get it done.

It does create a bit of a mess when he's spraying so move your car/washing, whatever's below that may get covered in muck!

I've also cheekily asked our window cleaner if he'd kindly give our gutters a quick clean out :) For a fiver each side of the house, another bargain in my eyes!

Be care jett spraying the roof,ok it will look good for a few months, but you will end up blasting all the grit that is attached to the roof tiles, and you will get a small change of colour(shadeing)
You will not get rid of the moss permanantly,as the spores etc will be already be in the inperfections of the roof tiles.
  • NO NO NO , not a good idea to clean roof tiles with anything as this disturbs the surface of the tiles which in turn can make them porous . For example , Marley roof tiles have a 50 year guarantee which is instantly invalidated if you scrub the moss off . I`d contact them direct for more details if in doubt.
If moss is bothering you the best , and natural , solution is to fit copper strips onto your ridge . When rain hits this it somehow reacts with the air creating a fungicide called Copper Sulphate/copper irons which removes any moss as it runs down the roof .
Simple and effective . I`ve sold this to dozens of customers and they`ve all been delighted . Search for "copper ridge" or "copper roof" and find some details and/or contractors in your area .

I completely support this cheap idea of running a length of copper wire at the top of the roof and also towards the halfway. The copper will oxidised under sun, rain, UV etc and release tiny amounts of copper oxide which will stop the moss taking hold. The wire wont even be visible after a few weeks.
  • Anyone any idea who would sell suitable copper wire ?

Electrical retailers will sell you a heavy gauge copper wire that will serve the purpose. Ask for earthing cable that should not be line with plastic.

alternatively have anew roof fitted, or a loft conversion, like it did....... bit severe though, just to clear moss....

I like the idea of the copper wire.......
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)

What about flexible copper pipe ?

Have some about, so would be handy if it worked.
