You don't have to tell anyone usually, check if your house has any rules about having livestock though.
Think twice about rescue chickens, I tried it (I'm used to having normal chickens) and it wasn't very successful. I won't be doing it again, not worth the hassle. Hybrids like Black Rock, will be much better for you.
Pig farm Jamie had the brilliant idea of getting hundreds of ex battery chickens and keeping them for eggs, they didn't last long, he killed the lot.
It sounds lovely, but its not very practical.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
My son bought a chicken coop as a Christmas Present for my wife and me. We used to keep a few chickens, almost 20 years ago, and the eggs were great. Problem for us was that we also got a bantam cockerell (Henry), who could 'crow for England'. This did annoy one of the neighbours, who complained to the council. Someone came to visit us, but said that, as long as we kept the noise down, there was no problem in keeping chickens.
Needless to say, 'Henry' was painlessly 'dispatched'. We kept the chickens for a few years, but as the children grew there were other priorities and we 'drifted away' from the 'good life'.
I do miss the eggs - supermarket eggs are never the same. We will be getting a couple of 'point of lay' hens (no cockerells :rotfl: ) in the spring - I have to build their run first.
I'm looking forward to it - especially after watching 'Hugh's Chicke Run'. Ours will be purely for eggs, though.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.

For ex battery hens try http://www.bhwt.org.uk/rescue-dates.php. Hybrids at point of lay cost between £10 and £20 here, but I see a lot of people quoting £5 per bird - if anyone can tell me where then I am all ears.
You do need to check that there are no restrictive covenants on your property. I used to have a new build which had a ban on anything other than cats and dogs. My last house had a ban on keeping any livestock in the garden, as did the allotment we rented. Someone within earshot had a donkey and a cockeral, having lived with the noise I would not inflict this on my neighbours.'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need' Marcus Tullius Cicero0 -

i think watching jamie oliver last night has really made me and my oh think properly about where we buying our eggs and meat and my oh doesnt want to buy eggs from supermarkets anymore so if i get my own then we wont have to!
And the money we save from buying eggs will let me be able to buy free range chicken meat!As we buy at least 6 eggs per week and ive always bought smart price eggs as we live on low budget but i certianly wont be doing that now¬
And i also bought the 2 for £5 meat chickens for the same reason but as i say what i will save having my own eggs can let me add that little more to buying better meat!We Make A Living By What We Get. We Make A LIFE By What We GIVE:money:

Exactly our thinking - I didn't watch Jamie, but did watch 'Hugh's Chicken Run' and would very much like to be better able to afford free-range chickens, and other meat.

A chap around the road from me has ducks - they are not fenced in and they follow him around the garden like cats. Never seen one in the road, though, so they must be quite territorial.I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I like this web site too - lots of useful info on chicken keeping and some specifics on ex battery experiences.
