Halifax offers for you

Hi Guys,

Basically from having spent many years overseas my credit score on returning here to the UK was zero. I couldn't even open a current account. I started out with a Halifax savings account to have my salary paid into. After six months i was allowed a high interest current account that I've had for over 18 months. On opening the current account and setting up internet banking i applied online for a Halifax credit card. This was declined. After 6 months i applied again but this time in branch. Once again the application was refused. The guy in the branch rang head office to ask why as i had a fair bit in savings and a good salary, he was told it was for low credit score, but did say to reapply once I'd had my current account for a year. This i did online at the 12 month mark. Declined again. Next was at the 18 month mark but once again declined
I get constant letters from Halifax offering loans at 6.9% along the lines of £13,000 is reserved and waiting for you. I also have a guaranteed £5,000 overdraft if i wish to accept. All i have to do online is click apply. I dont as i dont need it.

NOW online under the "offers for you" they are offering a credit card which they call the Halifax 12 month card"
0% for 12 months on balance transfers and purchases. 15.9% APR

I'm not sure if i should apply as i don't need another credit search on my file for a declined card.
Anyone have any suggestions or experience with these "offers for you?" I don't need the card but it would help me with my credit score.
Cheers

Thanks for that. Maybe i'll give them a call rather than just apply online.
    Cheers
  • I guess you choose the wrong bank. I came to UK and opened HSBC account and after 3 month a credit card was issued to me.
You can try other bank's credit card.
  • When I orginally applied for an account with the Halifax, I got an overdraft but not a credit card as I was declined. After 6 months, I got the same message appear and when I called they said that as the conduct of my current account was good, the offer of a card was guaranteed but until I applied, they wouldn't know the exact limit. Sounds like you've been approved but you'll need to apply to see what limit they will give.
  • Thanks, I'll give them a call and see what happens.

Take the overdraft even if you do not need it. Take just a £1000 if it allows you the privilege of defining how much you can take. or if not just take the whole bl..dy amount they offer. you may not want it but just leave it there. and every month or two dip into it by a few £100's for good measure and they will surely give you a credit card!!.

Unfortunately thats how all banks work.. if you have loads of savings it does not matter. What matters is you displaying that you can be trusted with credit. and that is proven by having a credit facility. Having a savings account does not increase your credit score. I transferred £10,000 in ISA's into halifax 4 yr fixed ISA. I also opened a current account with halifax which was supposed to be an accoutn transfer but they refused my OD (of £4600 with current bank) and gave me just £250. ofcourse the reason they gave ws credit score!! but the basic reason was that the first 6 months the OD was free of interest. Voila the moment teh 6 months were up they gaveme what I wanted!!!....

btw. What they nee dto see is you having credit so take what they offer and then theywil give you what you want in 3-6 months time. so take the OD first and then they will give you CC as well.

    Thanks Udy,
I did apply again online following the link halifax provided in internet banking. Still declined :-)
They did provide an address this time where i could write to if i wanted to supply any other information etc.
I will try the overdraft thing. I try and keep my current account at £2,500 so as to get the maximum interest. So if i just transfer say £3,000 out of the current account to my savings account making me £500 overdrawn for a couple of days and then transfer £3,000 back from the savings that will work?
    Cheers,

Just an update for anyone interested. I made an apeal against my online rejection for a credit card and still waiting to hear, but today when i looked in my internet banking my guaranteed overdraft of £5,000 has changed to a guaranteed £10,000.
Hard to work out the problem with a credit card...maybe they know they wont make much money off me?
    Cheers.

I can't really add anymore to what I said in the "other place" here (ignore the first two paragraphs, they're not relevant).
