Microwave or Gas hob

Options
A silly little discussion but bf and I were cooking dinner tonight and as usual I put a glass bowel with chopped veggies in the microwave and cooked them for approx 6 mins on high. I use the vegetable pre-programmed setting just press and leave it.

Bf wondered if it is more economical than boiling veggies on the gas hob, which I would do with boiling water from the kettle.

I thought it would be, but now I am wondering. Just for boiling a serving of veggies for two people, microwave or gas hob? Or not much in it?

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

    Time for some sums :)

Lets say your microwave is 800W on that setting. So it's 0.8KW

Cook for 6 minutes which is one tenth of an hour. So it's 0.1hr

    That makes it 0.8 x 0.1 KiloWatt Hours = 0.08KWH

Boiling the kettle ... kettles are normally at 3KW

Guess at 2 minutes to boil a small amount (?) which is 1/30th of an hour 0.033hr

    So the kettle is 3 x 0.033 = 0.099KWH

Which is more than the microwave before you even start to add in the cost of using the cooker...

    HTH :)

  • Guess that makes me right then, i was pushing for microwave, i tend to use it as much as i can for cooking, as i thought this more economical. Thanks for that i'm crap at maths and i'm too tired to be bothered, horrendous working week!!!

Best check the ratings plate on the back of the microwave - they're never anything like 100% efficient - the 800W is the microwave output - likely to be 1100-1300W input depending on the model/manufacturer/age

Still gives us a round figure comparison of approx 6 mins at approx 1kW versus approx 2 mins at approx 3kW both of which work out to approx 6kW minutes.

Since you've still got to use the cooker after using the kettle the microwave option is still the cheapest :)

There was a segment on our current affair show here last week, unfortunatly I missed it by hubby watched it. It was the gist of the researchers have done all these tests now and have found them microwaving food etc is taking all the goodness out of them. I use my microwave a lot for reheating & veggies. Has anybody else seen heard anything recently about this?

    Haven't heard about that AussieLass.

I tend not to use my microwave on a regular basis - but it comes in handy for several things (obviously).

I *do* use my steamer a LOT for veggies and fully utilise the 3 tiers.

Saw a report about that...steaming is the most healthy, boiling is pretty bad and microwaving is death to vitamins. The researchers used broccoli as their test veg, which is fairly awful boiled anyway. Steam away people.
