Charity Shoe Boxes

Options
I belatedly made three shoe boxes up just before Christmas which gave me some satisfaction.
With making up as many as I can in readiness for next Christmas I have been looking around for sale items without much success so wonder if any of you keen shoppers could put me on the track for bargains you have seen during the current 'Sale' season please?

    That's such a good idea!

I've no idea what to suggest though, maybe the children's shops for small gloves and scarves?

  • This is such a lovely idea - what kind of things are you looking to put in and where do you hand them in??

Accessorize I find are really good for stocking fillers and they often reduce them down to a pound or two. Also try Claire's accessories for little pieces of jewellry but also little notebooks, stickers, mini stationary sets etc.
  • I tend to find hats and gloves at this time of the year in the sales.
I do tend to pick up more things in the end of summer sales..especially once the children have gone back to school as the supermarkets sell pens/colours/rubbers etc really cheap.

I appreciate and thank you for your helpful suggestions.
Mind you I must confess I'd have never thought of the Claire Assessory shop, so will ask my grandaughter if she'll go in and look around for ideas.
    Thanks again

The main children's shoebox appeal is Samaritans Purse. They are however quite a fundamental christian group, and have been know to 'adapt' the shoeboxes before they reach the children, so may not suit everyone (either religiously or morally) - http://humfam.humgroups.org.uk/Samaritans_Purse.html. There are details of other groups on this site who would accept donations.

There are also appeals through most local regiments for forces stationed overseas (ask at the local TA or Cadets group), or you could do one for a local old peoples home/area (my Brownie pack used to do that and deliver them whilst carol singing, which went down well).

Superdrug's bargains are great atm and they have lots of things like hats, scarves, slippers, toiletries etc for under £2.

I have a lot of dealings with two charities which supply these boxes to kids in Eastern Europe, and I know that they're predicting a very demanding Christmas 2008. One group need to get at least another 4000:eek:

I also know that they often find themselves short of hats, scarves and gloves and gummy sweets.

Don't know if this helps you at all in what to look out for in the sales?

    I've been Money Tipped!
I have been doing these boxes for a couple of years. Last year I bought loads of stuff throughout the year and then completely forgot about it. When I checked I had missed the date so I am very annoyed with myself.

Anyway this year I will make sure I write the date down well in advance. I already have 6 boxes and will do more throughout this year.

I buy a lot of things in Poundland - hat and scarft sets, coloured pencils, crayons, pads, flannels, toothpaste and brushes, hair brushes, hair clips etc, toys. They have masses of suitable things. I also buy from Claire's and places like Tesco, Asda, Superdrug.
