I tried the " I wanna " board for this but didn't get much luck, so I'm wondering if you knowledgeable bunch on the techie board can help.
I've loads of old negs I've had handed down to me and 35mm slides that I'd love to scan and archive or print.
Lots of them have never been seen by us, so I need a scanner that can do the job or is there a device that you can buy that is dedicated to just scanning negs and slides.
Thanks for any help

There are a few flatbed scanners around that come with 35mm attachments, but AFAIK the 'dedicated' 35mm machines tend to be aimed at professionals, with prices to match.
I have not used them, but I believe the flatbed ones would need to scan any 35mm item at high resolution, so may be fairly slow - perhaps not ideal if you have a lot of items to scan.
A couple of flatbed examples are the CanoScan 3200F which you should be able to get for around the £50-60 mark, or the Epson Perfection 2480 for a similar sort of price. Try kelkoo.co.uk.0 -
Still think post on http://forum.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=Wanna;action=display;num=1097446009
worth a look. Would have got one myself if I hadn't found the power supply to my Mustec had died.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -
Hmmmm....seems we now have the same thread running in two forums.... :-/
Anyway, this months PC Plus magazine has a review of several scanners that have 35mm attachments. The article in itself may not be enough to pay the cover price of the mag, but it might be worth a visit to your local WH Smiths! :-[
Most of the 35mm-capable scanners are quoted as taking 30-45 seconds for such an item.0 -
Sorry Peter, didn't mean to say your post was no good, just that I was hoping for a larger number of scanners and experience of how well they perfomed.
Do you think that the scanner you mentioned will do a reasonable job as it isn't that expensive. Not that I want to spend a lot, it's just that I thought that they'd cost more.
If that's the price that'll do the job for me.......wonderful !!
Thanks for your trouble, I do appreciate it.

I've got a Canon 3000F which works very well with 35mm negatives. I believe the 3200F is a newer model, but I don't know what they've changed - not very much that I can see...There's love in this world for everyone. Every rascal and son of a gun.

Got the highest score on 23 Sept MicroMart survey, Canon 3200f can close second.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0 -
Just got the HP3770, not tried it on slides yet but the rest is awsome. Scanning a 6x4colour picture takes about 30 sec compared to 5mins on my old mustec. Hope you are now sorted.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

sorry to drag this up again, but I'm about to buy my first scanner and know very little about them.
I too want to scan in slides (like the ones above) and I've viewed a few such as these ones: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002SOGNC/ref=br_lf_ce_1/202-3934577-3636601
http://www.dealtime.co.uk/xPF-CANOSCAN_4200F_COLOR_IMAGE_SCANNER_3200X6400_DPI_48_BIT
http://www.dealtime.co.uk/xPF-Canon_Canon_CanoScan_5200F_4800dpi_48bit_USB_Canon
Now I know these will all scan slides for me, but only the 5200F tells me that it scans text as PDF. I will want to scan text and then be able to edit it. Is this just the software that comes with it that enables this or can all scanners scan text to PDF format? Or indeed is there an easier way to use a scanner to scan in text for editing purposes?
All help will be very much appreciated.

I would have thought that .pdf would be the LAST format you would want scanned text to be in if you then want to edit it? ???
A better option would be to use an OCR package and then edit in Word, or the WP package or other application of your choice.
I believe just about all scanners will come with an OCR capability linked into a WP package these days.0 -
Thanks lincslad, I now know what a WP package and OCR are after a quick google search and will be able to get a decent scanner (well for my needs anyway) for around £70.

Thanks again.0
