...and I have invited a few friends for drinks and nibbles.
I would like to do some finger food, but I want to avoid things like peanuts, crisps etc!
I cannot find them in the index but does anyone have idea's for easy canapes etc?
Thank you.

It depends how "posh" you want to be.
Personally I love the retro nosh of volovents, cocktail sausages, chicken legs etc.
Otherwise, you could cut up small squares of bread - both white and brown - and put cream cheese with smoked salmon (tesco do a cheapo range)

Not going posh is the way I like it!!
Why not make a pizza and cut it up?
I know you said you didn't want nuts, but what about spicey nuts? Or do something inventive with pumkin seeds?Comping, Clicking & Saving for Change0 -

it appears to be an American version so here is some useful info:
Four sticks of butter weigh one pound, or 16 ounces. This is how we usually purchase it here in the US, in a 4 stick, one pound box. One "stick" of butter weighs 4 ounces. One stick of butter is 1/2 cup and if I'm reading my measuring cup correctly, would be somewhere between 120 to 125 ml. Hope this helps! I'm sorry I haven't learned the metric system. I believe my grandchildren have learned it. Wish one of them were here so I could ask them! (08/01/2006)

RE: How Much is a Stick of Butter?
Well, I don't know metric, but a stick of butter is 8 tablespoons or 4 ounces. I hope you can convert this to metric now. (08/01/2006)0 -
Just had a do like that but I am veggie so you might need to adapt to a moe "meat friendly" way
Pasta Salad with olives, feta cheese and tomato - vinaigrette dressing
Potato Salad with creme fraiche, lemon, dill dressing
Sandwiches halves:
cheese and tomato
hoummous and grated carrot some had beetroot on
Egg, creme fraiche and dill (didn't use all for the potato salad)
some crisps (Lidl...)
The total spread for about 30 people cost me (incl. 3 bottles of wine - asked guests to bring alcohol, a box of beer) £55.0 -
Small crostini (m&s sell bags of them or you could toast some buttered french bread and make your own), piece of parma ham on top and a scrape of parmesan
Blini, sour cream/chive, smoked salmon
This is about the extent my canapes run to..!0 -
Most of the ready prepared things at the supermarket come at a fancy price.
Anyone able to recommend their favourite home-prepared items?0 -
puff pastry, caremelised red onoins, sprinkled with crumbly(welsh) goats cheese...mmmm yummy...:)
I make loads of these in bite size tartlet shapes
puff pastry, fill with sauage meat with added sage and onion stuffing, layered with thinly sliced tomatoes, then "plait" the pastry over the filling..tasty and delicious...
